The U.S. Coast Guard rescued four people from a boat fire on Sunday afternoon, just a few miles offshore of Surfside Beach.
The four people were aboard a 40-foot Viking sport fishing boat that caught fire about 9 miles south of the beach. They made a radio mayday call just after 1 p.m. before abandoning ship into a life raft.
The Coast Guard said it pinpointed the vessel's location from the mayday call and arrived at about 1:40 p.m. to rescue the four from the raft. The fishing boat eventually sank.
Just minutes later, at 1:44 p.m., there was a 911 call regarding a capsized boat near the Freeport jetties.
However, the stranded man was able to make in safely to shore in a life jacket before first responders could get to him.
"These are two examples of how proper safety gear will save your life; life rafts and life jackets," the Coast Guard's Zachery Edwards said in a prepared statement.
