Boat fire causes $80,000 in damages - Chattanooga, TN

1/26/2018

A 25-foot Cruiser boat caught fire at Island Cove Marina on Highway 58 Friday afternoon.
An Island Cove Marina resident saw the boat on fire and released the boat to force it out into the slough to avoid catching the entire dock of boats on fire, according to the Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department.
The cause of the fire is undetermined and no injuries were reported.
Fire officials reported the owners of the boat had been running the boat this morning, returned from the lake and left the marina. Moments later, they received a call from Island Cove Marina reporting their boat was on fire.
Damages are listed at $75,000-$80,000.
The Hamilton County Hazmat team is responding to the scene to contain a possible fuel spill from the charred boat.

Passengers swim to safety after fire on casino shuttle boat - New Port Richey, FL

Fifteen people were injured Sunday when a fire broke out on a shuttle boat taking passengers to a casino boat near New Port Richey, Florida, north of Tampa. There were 50 people on board when the fire started about half a mile from shore, said Shawn Whited, the Pasco County fire division chief. All made it to shore.
The injuries included smoke inhalation and chest pains, fire department Deputy Chief Andrew Fossa said. All those aboard were accounted for, the Coast Guard said Sunday evening.
Fire department officials said the fire likely started in the engine room and spread quickly.Officials said the boat's captain saved lives because he turned the boat around when he noticed the flames, managing to get closer to shore and making it easier for first responders to reach those in the water.
Officer Jason Zimmerman of the New Port Richey Police Department said some of the older passengers were face down in the water when he reached them.
"If we didn't show up at the time we did, there were going to be serious consequences," Zimmerman said.
The 59-degree water combined with Gulf breezes created a risk of hypothermia for the passengers, emergency officials said.
"They were absolutely frigid when they got out of there," Fossa said.
The first 911 call about the fire came in around 4:15 p.m., CNN affiliate WFTS reported. The boat was still burning about two hours later.
The fire broke out near waterfront homes, and passengers who jumped out and swam to shore ended up in backyards, a witness, who gave her name only as Hala, told WFTS.

Pre-dawn fire destroys $40,000 boat docked at marina - Dania Beach, FL

Flames ripped through a boat in Dania Beach early Wednesday, burning it practically down to the water line and completely destroying the 42-foot Chris-Craft valued at $40,000, officials said.
The boat, named Lady Di, caught fire shortly after 4:30 a.m. at the Dania Beach Marina, 151 N. Beach Road.
A man, a woman and a small dog were onboard the boat when the fire broke out, but no one was hurt, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane.
The occupants of a neighboring boat alerted the two people to the fire by banging on the Chris-Craft.
“These folks had very good neighbors. These neighbors alerted them early on in the event,” Kane said.
The man and the woman “say they barely had time to escape and left with just a few items and their dog, Cocoa.”
Some 60 firefighters from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, the agency’s marine unit and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue were at the scene.
Arriving crews found the Chris-Craft, which was tied to a boat slip, going up in flames.
“It took firefighters approximately two hours to fully extinguish the fire, which was declared out just before 7 a.m.,” Kane said.
No other boats at the marina were affected by the blaze. However, about a dozen people on other nearby boats had to be temporarily evacuated to a bus that was brought to the scene and should be able to go back to their boats later Wednesday when investigators determine it is safe to do so.
How the fire started remains under investigation.

Two boats go up in flames after explosion at Miami marina - Miami, FL

Firefighters are investigating what led to a boat exploding in Miami. It happened at a marina at approximately 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, CBS Miami reports.
The explosion sent many people in the area running for safety.
A 24-foot boat called the Captain Jack caught fire in what witnesses described as an explosion, and then set another nearby boat ablaze as well.
"I see like a big explosion," said Felipe Francia, who was working on a boat right across the way at the time.
William Jackson was sleeping in the building right next to the marina.
"I heard like a boom," he said. "I thought somebody hit the wall. And the picture came off [the wall] and hit me on the top of the head."
Jackson came out and found people at the marina trying to use fire extinguishers on the flames, with little effect.
"There was a guy working on the boat and he said his boat just exploded," Jackson said. "He didn't get hurt at all. His boat there in the water."
The fire spread to a nearby 50-foot catamaran as heavy smoke blanketed the area. People called 911.
Some onlookers were critical of how long it took firefighters to arrive. The fire was practically out by the time a fire boat got to the scene. But the fire department defended its response.
"The response time was rather quick," Captain Ignatius Carroll with City of Miami Fire Rescue said. "But they have to understand maneuvering through an area that has a lot of stuff around it makes it difficult for the firefighters to get to it. Especially in an area that's filled with a lot of smoke."
Miami Fire Rescue estimates it took about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control.
In the end, two boats were badly damaged and a few others had some issues due to the heat. But no one was hurt.
Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the incident.
