Boater rescued off Oxnard coast after vessel catches fire - Ventura, CA

1/30/2019

A good Samaritan rescued a person aboard a 50-foot boat that caught fire off the coast of Oxnard on Tuesday, officials said.
The U.S. Coast Guard alerted local firefighters to the blaze just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, said Ventura County Fire Department Capt. Brian McGrath, a spokesman for the agency.
Crews with the city of Ventura Fire Department also responded, he said.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Davonte Marrow said a good Samaritan first caught sight of the boat on fire about 6 nautical miles west of the Channel Islands. The Good Samaritan was able to rescue the lone occupant of the boat and alert the Coast Guard to the incident, Marrow said.
That’s when fire crews were sent over to try to put out the blaze in the main cabin of the vessel, McGrath said. However, it was difficult to get the water down into the cabin, so crews let the fire burn down to the water level, McGrath said.
Marrow said crews also didn’t want to put all the water into the boat, causing it to sink and release fuel into the ocean.
The owner of the boat and a towing vessel were expected to return to the scene at 1 p.m. Wednesday to tow the damaged boat to shore, Marrow said.
No one was injured in the fire, McGrath said.

A 40-foot-long power boat caught fire as it was fueling in the Shoreline Marina in Long Beach on Friday afternoon, but no one was hurt, officials said.
Firefighters quickly doused the blaze from a rescue boat, preventing it from spreading to any other vessels at the fueling dock, said Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Brian Fisk.
The boat was being supplied with 160 gallons of fuel before the fire broke out about 1 p.m., Fisk said
“We don’t know how it started, the cause is under investigation,” he said.
The dock was not damaged, Fisk said.

Multiple boats damaged in fire at marina on Lake Washington - Seattle, WA

At least three boats were damaged in a fire at Seattle's Lakewood Moorage marina on Lake Washington Sunday night.
"The plume of smoke and fire going up into the sky -- you knew it was the marina right away," said witness Ari Hoffman. "'There was a two story boat that you could see was on fire -- you could see the whole thing going up."
The Seattle Fire Department responded to moorage around 9:15 to find several boats on fire.
"When crews arrived on scene, two of the boats were already engulfed in flames and another boat was impacted," said Kristin Tinsley with Seattle Fire.
Fire crews had to pull around 2,000 feet of hose to reach the fire and start putting it out.
Witness sent me this video of the fire that burned several boats at Lakewood Moorage tonight.
The fire is now under control.
No word yet on a cause of the fire.
Firefighters were able to get the flames under control in about 20 minutes, Tinsley said.
A 59-year-old man was taken to Harborview Medical Center with minor burn injuries. A Seattle Police officer stayed behind with the man's dog until he could return from the hospital.

"Thank God it wasn't worse -- the people who live on this boats weren't here tonight," Hoffman said. "This could have been so much worse."
Fire investigators said there is too much damage to the boats to figure out the cause, which will be listed as "undetermined." All three boats are a total loss, fire officials said, with an estimated damage loss of $200,000.

Boat fire in Edgewater displaces liveaboard - Anne Arundel County, MD

Anne Arundel County firefighters were called to a boat fire in Edgewater on Friday evening.
The fire at the Holiday Hill Marina in the 3900 block of Calawasse Road was called in at 5:06 p.m., fire officials said.
Firefighters arrived to find the powerboat, a 1987 42-foot Silverton Cruiser, fully engulfed in flames. County fire spokesman Capt. Russ Davies said at 5:33 p.m. firefighters were working a fire aboard one boat, though reports and a fuzzy photo that appeared on social media suggested the fire had spread to other boats in the marina.
Nearly an hour, later firefighters were using foam to extinguish remaining fire in the bow of the boat, Davies said.
The boat was a liveaboard and the single occupant is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Investigators were on the scene preparing to investigate the possible cause of the blaze as soon as it is extinguished. Davies said electrical connections or a heat source were two areas that would be examined.

Boat Fire Causes $1 Million in Damages at Constitution Marina - Boston, MA

Three boats at Constitution Marina caught fire on Tuesday at around 11:20 p.m., causing more than $1 million in damages to the water crafts.
Boston Fire responded with its Fire Boat first and began putting out three boats actively involved and with heavy flames showing.
Boston Fire Tower 3, Boston Fire Marine Units and MassPort Fire fought the blazes from the North Washington Street Bridge, from the water and from the docks as well. MassPort used their specialized fire foam to help put down the blaze.
Companies put down the fires within about one hour and prevented them from spreading to any additional boats.
Two of the boats sunk, but there were no injuries and no one on board any of the boats at the time of the fire.
The fire is currently under investigation.

3 Boats Catch Fire, 2 Sink In Charlestown Marina Fire - Boston, MA

For Kate Harrison and Will Leon, the boat they call home is now a total loss and it couldn’t come at a worse time with Kate seven months pregnant.
“Getting our boat ready for the baby, clearing out space, though there’s not too much to begin with. We had a baby shower recently and lost all of our possessions from the baby shower,” Harrison tells WBZ-TV.
Everything lost in a raging fire late Tuesday night at Constitution Marina in Charlestown that engulfed their boat and three others, causing $1 million in damage, but injuring no one.
“It’s unfortunate to see it like this,” said Leon. “I put in a lot of hours to make it nice and it’s tough to take a loss like this.”

It was a harrowing escape for the boat owners as flames spread quickly. John de Vries and his wife Regina McGorray were awakened by the commotion and ran up the pier without even their shoes.
“In order to escape to safety we thought this boat was going to blow up, flames would hit our boat or hit the pier but either way we had to run past it,” said McGorray.
Their boat was one of two that sank and is now just visible at the surface. It was a tough battle for firefighters as the fuel-fed fire reignited as quickly as crews could put it down.
Now it’s a difficult recovery for this close community of boaters.
“They’re not luxuries, people live here. It’s the only home for some of us who have no place else to go,” said boat owner Walter Hope.
Now for Harrison and Leon, the devastation comes at what should be a joyous time.
“Soon we’ll be thinking about making a home for the baby but thinking about that feels overwhelming right now,” said Harrison.
About 40-50 firefighters responded, trying to tackle the huge flames from all sides. A marine unit also responded to douse the flames from the water. Investigators are trying to determine what started the fire.

It happened at 1727 Savona Parkway.

Cape Coral Police Department said that no arrests related to a boat fire were made on Monday night.
An investigation is ongoing.
