'I could hear people screaming': Alabama fire chief confirms 8 deaths after fire destroys 35 boats - Scottsboro, AL

1/27/2020

Fire raced through an Alabama dock Monday, killing at least eight people and torching dozens of boats as people leaped into the Tennessee River to escape the roaring flames.
Scottsboro Fire Chief Gene Necklaus said eight people believed to be missing were confirmed dead. He said the death toll could rise as rescue workers access sunken hulls.
Thirty-five boats, houseboats and pontoon vessels burned in the fire. Some were docked for recreation, but for some the boats were their homes. Necklaus said the blaze was on the inland side of the dock, making rescues difficult.
Seven people were pulled from the water and treated for minor injuries, mainly for hypothermia from the cold water, he said. Some boats sank at the dock, he said, and some drifted from their moorings and sank.
Jackson County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Rocky Harnen said efforts to find all the boats, account for all the missing, identify those killed and notify families could take several days.
“There were numerous people rescued,” Harnen said. “We’re trying to get divers down here to search for possible victims.”
Julie Jackson awoke to a crackling sound, in the boat that she, her husband and child have made their home for five years now.
They moor at Dock A in Jackson County Park, a row of boat slips normally mirrored by nearby Dock B on Roseberry Lake.
The crackling Jackson heard early Monday was a fast-moving fire that – by the time she got off her boat to look – had engulfed half of Dock B.
“I could hear people screaming ‘help me,’” she told The Gadsden Times, part of the USA TODAY Network. “I never want to go through anything like that again.”
Jackson said in 18 minutes the dock was an inferno.
Mandy Durham and her boyfriend were among those sleeping on boats. She said she woke up to screams and "popping" noises.
“We could see red through the window. ... All these boats have propane tanks and gas tanks, and that’s a lot of fire."
She said she saw people jumping onto a boat at the end of the dock, but the flames spread to that boat, forcing them to leap into the water.
"Water was the only place they had to go," Durham said. “It's just extremely sad. It's horrible.”

2 bodies found on houseboat on Lake McClure identified as La Grange and Merced natives - Mariposa, CA

1/13/2020

Boating experts are urging people to check their safety equipment after Mariposa County sheriff's deputies made a shocking discovery at Lake McClure Saturday.

Investigators say carbon monoxide may be to blame for the deaths of 68-year-old Roger Dennis and 63-year-old Myles Correia.

"Carbon monoxide is one of the deadly killers which you just don't know, you can't really smell it," said Archie Steele, president of the California Bass Federation.

Steele is warning lake residents not to leave their safety up to chance.

He offers the advice after the two men were found dead in a Lake McClure houseboat.

"There is a lot of houseboats on the lake, and to me, they are no different than a home," Steele said. "You come, you stay and sleep on them. You really should have smoke detectors and CO detectors."

Deputies found the men after a friend reported they hadn't heard from Dennis in over a week.

What was supposed to be a welfare check at Dennis' houseboat, ended with a shocking discovery.

Steele says the deaths are unfortunate but reinforce the importance of working carbon monoxide detectors.

"There's times the CO detector might go off because the motor is running, but I would rather have that nuisance versus going to bed, saying good night and not waking up," Steele said.

At the moment, detectives have ruled out foul play.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death

Fire destroys Honga River waterman's boat - Annapolis, MD

1/13/2020

A late-night fire that destroyed a deadrise workboat off of the Honga River is under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal. And two watermen are now out of work.
The 40-foot boat caught fire around 10:40 p.m. Saturday at a dock in Wingate, a small community in Dorchester County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The Lakes and Straits Volunteer Fire Company was reportedly responding to a car wreck nearby when they passed the boat on fire at Powley’s Marina, known by locals as Wingate Dock.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control, but not before it caused $70,000 in damage, according to the Fire Marshal’s Office. The deadrise belongs to Brandon Beville, who, along with another waterman, makes his living on that boat.
The fire happened right next door to the Honga Oyster Company, an aquaculture operation that does business with Beville.
Honga Oyster’s owner, Bill Cox, later helped move the engine off of the boat, and it appears to be salvageable. On Monday the hull was being assessed to see if it’s sound enough for a fiberglass replacement.
“It was a nice boat,” Cox tells Bay Bulletin.
No one was on board at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries. The Fire Marshal’s Office lists the preliminary cause as “incendiary,” but didn’t elaborate to Bay Bulletin, citing its active and open investigation.
Cox believes things could have been much worse, if the wind had been blowing a different direction. He says the wind blew the fire back toward the engine box, rather than sending sparks towards several other boats docked nearby.
For Beville, though, a man in his 20s with a young family, the future will be uncertain.
“He’ll probably get on someone else’s boat and save money to try and buy another one,” Cox says.

3 boats destroyed in Lake Texoma dock-house fire - Denison, TX

1/8/2020

Three boats were destroyed and a storage slip was heavily damaged after a fire broke out at Grand Pappy Point Marina in Denison Wednesday afternoon.
Denison Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Bruce Geilhausen said dispatchers received a report of a boat-dock fire shortly before 1 p.m., prompting a multi-agency response. Prior to firefighters’ arrival, marina staff were reportedly able to move three burning boats out of the dock house and took them to an empty stretch of nearby shoreline. No injuries were reported.
The fire drew crews from Denison, Pottsboro, Locust and North Texas Regional Airport — Perrin Field and was managed from both on the ground and on the water. Geilhausen said strong winds, the boats’ flammable-fiberglass hulls and a concern over environmental impacts complicated the battle with flames. The boat-house’s wood interior sustained extensive damage and the structure was cordoned off.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Grayson County Fire Marshal’s Office and an environmental team from the U.S. Army Corp will monitor the clean-up process.
