Fire destroys 2 boats, dock at Lee Shores Marina - Chatham County, GA

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -
A fire at a Wilmington Island marina caused extensive damage to a dock and destroyed two boats early Sunday morning.

The owner of the Lee Shores Marina says the fire started on the dock, at a power source next to the boats.

The owner of a boat told me once fire spreads to fiberglass, it only intensifies the strength of the fire. I was told several things kept it from spreading, though: the quick response of the fire crews, the direction of the wind and the tide.

Monday, the salvaging effort continued. There's nothing left untouched by either fire or water damage.
The owner of the larger boat, the Sassafras, says the boat was in her family for more than a decade and hosted countless family get-togethers.
"I guess it's like losing a best friend. I feel like I am going to a funeral,” said Ceryle Stewart.
The other boat, the Little Emma, was barely recognizable.
There were no injuries during the incident.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued four people from a boat fire on Sunday afternoon, just a few miles offshore of Surfside Beach.

The four people were aboard a 40-foot Viking sport fishing boat that caught fire about 9 miles south of the beach. They made a radio mayday call just after 1 p.m. before abandoning ship into a life raft.

The Coast Guard said it pinpointed the vessel's location from the mayday call and arrived at about 1:40 p.m. to rescue the four from the raft. The fishing boat eventually sank.

Just minutes later, at 1:44 p.m., there was a 911 call regarding a capsized boat near the Freeport jetties.
However, the stranded man was able to make in safely to shore in a life jacket before first responders could get to him.

"These are two examples of how proper safety gear will save your life; life rafts and life jackets," the Coast Guard's Zachery Edwards said in a prepared statement.

Firefighters were able to quickly respond and put out a boat fire around 2 p.m. Thursday in Skyline.

Nick Walsh, Anacortes Fire Department division chief, said crew from Station 2 were in quarters and responded quickly. Crews arrived to find flames and smoke coming out the back end of a 53-foot powerboat.

“We did an offensive attack on the fire. We were able to get it under control really quickly,” he said.

The boat owner did a haul out Thursday night because it looked like the boat was taking on water after the fire.

Walsh said the cause is undetermined at this time.

He said he didn’t notice any environmental impact. He didn’t see an oil sheen and the fuel tanks appeared to be intact.

No one was on the boat at the time of the fire and it was the only boat on that dock at the time, Walsh said. The dock neighbor returned while the fire was going on, he said.

Fuel contained after boat fire in Pensacola Bay - Pensacola, FL

Two people made it to safety after a boat caught fire Sunday, the U.S. Coast Guard and environmental officials said.

According to a report from the Coast Guard and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the small pleasure craft caught fire in Pensacola Bay south of the Bob Sikes toll bridge Sunday afternoon.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire.

Shane Michael, Gulf Breeze fire chief, said two people who were on board the boat were picked up by passersby and made it safely to shore.

They were not injured, according to an incident report.

Michael said the charred boat had grounded in shallow water.

Lt. Elizabeth Tatum, a spokeswoman for the Coast Guard, said an inspection showed that fuel was not leaking from the boat as originally feared. Initially, officials believed as much as 200 gallons of diesel fuel could have been released into the water.

"We have determined that the fuel is contained within the boat," she said.

Tatum said the boat's owner would be responsible for having it removed.
