Fire destroys several houseboats at Hoosier Hills Marina in Dubois Co. - Dubois County, IN

DUBOIS CO., Ind. (WFIE) - A massive fire destroyed several houseboats on Patoka Lake on Friday morning.
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officers tell 14 News they were alerted around 9 a.m. Friday at the Hoosier Hills Marina.
At the last count, they say it had spread and destroyed 11 boats and damaged 21 others.
Officials say that number could have been a lot higher.
Corporal Joe Haywood says the owners of the marina rushed to clear other boats from the area to stop the fire from spreading.
“Of course, that fire’s hot, it’s moving, you have some ropes that are frozen, so they had some challenges, but they were able to get some boats pushed out and that allowed them to keep that fire contained to those eleven,” explained Corporal Haywood.
He said the fire was the biggest marina one he had seen in terms of how many boats were affected.
Officials say they’re going to stay on scene and watch for hot spots until fire crews determine it’s safe. The State Fire Marshalls Office will then take over to investigate the cause.
Indiana DNR posted the video below where you can see the flames shooting from several boats.
Dispatch says everyone was able to get out of the boats safely.
Celestine Fire Department Assistant Chief Kurt Summersheim says the bulk of the fire was put out after four hours of work.
A hotspot later erupted just after noon and was quickly fought back down.
Dubois and Schnellville’s fire departments also went on scene to assist in stopping the fire.
Officials say staff from the marina are working to contact the affected boat owners.

Boat Explodes, Sinks In Richardson Bay; Injured Boater Rescued - Sausalito, CA

2/16/2021

A boater was rescued after an explosion aboard a sailboat anchored in San Francisco Bay sank the vessel in waters off the Sausalito shoreline, authorities said Tuesday.
The incident happened Sunday evening in Richardson Bay just off the Sausalito shoreline, according to the Richardson’s Bay Regional Agency (RBRA).

The Southern Marin Fire Protection District and U.S. Coast Guard responded to a distress call from the 35-foot vessel called Folie Douce. The occupant of the boat, identified as Mark Culver, suffered burns and other minor injuries and was rescued before the boat sank, RBRA said.
Culver was hospitalized and his condition was unknown.
RBRA Harbormaster Curtis Havel said he is working with Southern Marin Fire to determine the cause of the explosion.
“We suspect a propane tank leak could’ve led to this incident,” Havel said in press statement. “Mr. Culver is very lucky to have survived.”
Havel said propane leaks are one of a mariner’s greatest fears since it is heavier than air and a leak can pool in the bilge of a vessel. If a spark reaches the pooled-up propane, “it effectively acts as a bomb,” Havel said.
It is the responsibility of the vessel owner to arrange for retrieval and disposal of a sunken vessel, but Havel said it has not been established whether Culver is the vessel’s owner.
Havel said an abatement proceeding needs to be initiated to have the boat removed from the bay floor as soon as possible because the vessel could be leaking fuel, engine oil and other hazardous material. A 2019 vessel census of anchored Richardson Bay boats determined the Folie Douce was inoperable and not part of the RBRA’s Safe and Seaworthy Program.
A transition plan is underway to enforce anchoring time limits, remove marine debris vessels, connect vulnerable individuals on the anchorage with housing alternatives, and protect Richardson Bay’s eelgrass beds.

The United States Coast Guard and good Samaritans rescued two injured men after their vessel caught fire Tuesday dozens of miles off the Virginia coast.
The Coast Guard said watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Virginia Command Center received notification around 3 p.m. that a vessel on fire and was spotted around 3 p.m., 36 miles east of Fisherman Island.
The watchstanders released an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast, and the good Samaritan vessel responded to help the men.
When the good Samaritan crew pulled the two men from the water because they had abandoned ship due to the fire.
Ana Carolina Parrott says her husband Shawn Shapiro was on the good Samaritan boat with his father and another man.
Shapiro detailed the encounter in a Facebook post Tuesday, saying the man had been in the water for about 40 minutes before help arrived.
“The older man, the captain barely able to hang on to the transom he made a last ditch effort and put an arm the life ring and my dad and I barley got him aboard. The man was burned from his forehead down with skin hanging off both his hands with nothing but red skin and wrist bleeding. Eyes were burned blood red and shaking very badly from hypothermia,” Shapiro said.
The Coast Guard Cutter Dependable arrived and the crew safely took the two men aboard the cutter before a MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City medevaced the mariners to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
“The coordination between Coast Guard assets and the good Samaritan who retrieved the two individuals from the water was critical in the life saving aspect of this case,” said Lt. Cmdr. Erica Elfguinn, the Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator for this case. “The active participation of others on the water is essential to keeping our waterways safe.”

A man is unaccounted for after a boat caught fire and sank at the Bethel Island Marina overnight, an East Contra Costa Fire Protection District battalion chief said Monday morning.
Fire crews responded around 10 p.m. Sunday to the marina on a report of a boat on fire and arrived to find the vessel covered in flames that had also spread to a dock awning, Battalion Chief Craig Auzenne said.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze but learned a man lived on the boat and his vehicle was still parked at the marina, Auzenne said.
The roof and walls on part of the boat collapsed in on itself, and the boat itself ended up sinking around 1 a.m. Monday, he said.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office is now taking over the investigation and is working with a salvage team to bring the boat back up to the surface, Auzenne said.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, he said.

Fire crews rushed to the St. Helens Marine late Wednesday afternoon to a report of a boat on fire.
When crews arrived they found the two occupants out of the 30-foot boat sitting along the marine boardwalk and light smoke coming from the boat.
Craten Sanders said he and his wife, Kathy, were changing batteries on the boat when smoke began filling the vessel.
"Smoke came out and we called the fire department," Sanders said. "We hooked up a hose and began spraying water inside the boat where we thought it would be hot."
Sanders complained of smoke inhalation, otherwise the two said they were able to get off the boat uninjured.
The two St. Helens residents were preparing to go crabbing when the incident occurred on their boat.
"So now it will be a few weeks before we can go, but we'll get it figured out Sanders said.
Damage estimates to the boat were not immediately available.
