Fire Ignites on 50-Foot Boat Near Kona Kai Resort - San Diego, CA

Firefighters quickly knocked down a blaze aboard a boat near the Kona Kai Resort on Shelter Island Tuesday.
The fire sparked on the empty 50- to 60-foot vessel called "The Last Hurrah" docked in the Kona Marina for unknown reasons at about 3:30 a.m., fire officials said.
Harbor police and fire crews arrived to find the vessel engulfed in flames and quickly began their attack, knocking down the fire in less than 30 minutes.
It was raining when firefighters arrived, and San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Kelly Zombro said it helped tame flames.
It’s a little surprising that the fire got so big considering it is raining and has been," he said. "It certainly slowed it down a little bit, but even with that there was some significant flames coming off of this,"
Zombro said the flames when they first arrived were shooting 20 feet into the air.
There was some concern that the fire could spread to neighboring boats because of their proximity within the marina but the aggressive attack from firefighters prevented the fire from growing, Zombro said.
The fire was contained to the outside of the vessel.
"Everything on the exterior, on the very top cabin area, is what’s burnt. The interior never got any extension,"
There was no one on board at the time the fire erupted and no injuries reported.  Fire investigators were called to determine the cause of the fire.
No other information was available.

Mobile Fire-Rescue gives update on marina fire on Rock Point Road - Mobile, AL

3/9/2019

Mobile Fire-Rescue has released new information about a fire at The Grand Mariner Marina that happened on Thursday, March 7.
Around 2:58 p.m. on Thursday, MFRD responded to the marina in the 6000 block of Rock Point Road for a report of a marine vessel fire.
When crews arrived, they confirmed that a 25-foot long house boat was fully engulfed in flames. The vessel was threatening nearby boats and boat housing, according to MFRD.
The MFRD Fire Boat was requested to the scene to assist crews on land.
Over time, flames spread to several other boats and portions of the boat housing. Firefighters battled to protect the housing structure, thus reducing risk of significant damage and potential collapse, while also mitigating loss to boats and other property.
With assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard, MFRD crews applied several hundred gallons of water to numerous fires in the area over the span of about seven hours.
Aqueous foam was used on a boat fires containing oils, diesel fuel, and other flammable liquids.
All of the fires were extinguished and units cleared the scene by 10:30 p.m. A total of seven vessels were damaged or destroyed during the incident, according to MFRD.
After a thorough investigation, the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Crab boat burns at the dock - Newport, OR

3/2/2019

Fire crews labored for several hours in falling snow early Wednesday morning to contain a fire that blackened the wheelhouse and galley of an 80-foot steel crab and shrimp boat at the Port of Newport.
The BJ Thomas caught fire when a space heater sparked in the galley.
The first units of the Newport Fire Department to arrive on scene at Dock 5 noted heavy smoke coming from the boat. Firefighters using portable dock pumps got access onto the boat to fight the fire, but were hampered by the extreme heat of the blaze, cold and snowy conditions and by having to force entry into the wheelhouse, according to information from Newport’s police and fire departments. No one was aboard when the fire broke out.
“Access was an issue and weather conditions were an issue,” Fire Chief Rob Murphy said Wednesday morning. “It was one of our tough ones, but we got it out.”
Fire crews wheeled the hose down on a cart, Murphy said, enabling them to better fight the fire. Dock pumps couldn’t keep up with the fire, and the U.S. Coast Guard’s Motor Lifeboat Victory was called in. The lifeboat’s onboard fire pumps gave crews the water they needed to put out the flames. Crews worked for three hours extinguishing the fire, cooling the vessel and performing overhaul.
The damage was extensive but was contained to the galley and wheelhouse of the boat, which will be taken to Reedsport for major overhaul, according to the owner Justin Yager.
"The important thing to me is that no one was hurt," he said, saying the operation will battle through the setback.
Newport Fire Department was assisted by Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay, Depoe Bay Fire, Seal Rock Fire, and Toledo Fire. The Newport Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Pacific West Ambulance provided assistance.

Four different boats also assisted with the department’s fire-fighting efforts.
“We appreciate the help from everyone,” Murphy said.
