Search On For Mystery Man Who Saved Ridley Park Mom, Son From Burning Boat - Ridley Park, PA

4/24/2019

A mother and son’s prayers were answered when a mystery man rescued them from a burning boat. Now the search is on for the good Samaritan who jumped into action to save their lives.
W
hat started out as the perfect day for a fishing trip for Sharon Keller and her son, Steven Kelly, quickly turned into a nightmare Tuesday.
Kelly’s boat rapidly became engulfed in flames and thick, black smoke began billowing into the air.
“All of a sudden we just heard a loud explosion so we both turned around and the engine exploded,” Keller said. “I go in panic mode.”
As the fire continued to move forward, Keller realized she had to bail and Kelly told her to jump.
Keller found herself in the water, holding onto the boat from underneath.
Her son was still battling the flames with a fire extinguisher as the powerless boat began coasting toward the Ridley Township Municipal Marina.
Worried about her son’s and her own safety, Keller began screaming for help, and that’s when the mystery man jumped in.
“The guy ends up finding me and he’s just real calm. He’s like, ‘I got you, I got you,'” Keller said. “So he leaned over, wrapped his arms around my arms and literally just pulled me up.”
Keller was rushed to the shore, where witnesses ran to provide aid while her son was still struggling to fight the boat fire – not only trying to save his vessel but others in the process too.
“I begged him to jump with me,” Keller said. “I’m like, ‘Steve, you got to jump, like who cares about this?’ And he said, ‘Mom, I didn’t care about the boat. I care about everybody else’s stuff.’ Because he’s got such a kind heart.”
Kelly’s boat was destroyed but both he and his mom are safe.
Keller has just one request, however. She wants to find the man who selflessly risked his life to save her.
“I would just love to say thank you so much,” Keller said.
Kelly’s boat that was destroyed was purchased just last year.
Nonetheless, his mom said he’s taking it all in stride, happy that there were no injuries and no other damage to any other boats in the marina.
Kelly is now on vacation in Florida.

Commercial vessel a ‘total loss’ after Monday morning fire at Westport Marina - Westport, WA

4/23/2019

The commercial fishing vessel Mary Ann L was a total loss after it caught fire on Float 11 at the Westport Marina early Monday morning.
South Beach Regional Fire Authority Chief Dennis Benn said the call came in at 2:45 a.m.; when responders arrived on the scene the vessel was about 5o percent involved in flame.
“A good Samaritan was using a garden hose already on the dock, to protect a boat that was next to the burning vessel,” said Benn. At 02:45 this morning, we were dispatched to a commercial fishing vessel fire, on float 11 in Westport.
Fire crews were able to quickly knock down most of the fire within minutes, but firefighting efforts were hampered by burning fuel and debris covering some of the fire, said Benn.
Some of the hoses and thru hull fittings were damaged by the fire, and the vessel began to take on water, and was in danger of sinking, said Benn, but “The Coast Guard and Port of Grays Harbor were quick to react and were able to stabilize the vessel.”
Benn said the owner is working with the Port of Grays Harbor and the Department of Ecology to have the vessel removed from the marina to lessen any environmental impacts.
The Vessel is a total loss, of nearly $200,000, said Benn. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The call came in at 1:30 p.m. and was deemed under control at 2:49 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There have been no reports of pollution or injuries.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people and a dog off Islamorada on Wednesday afternoon after their boat caught fire.
The 38-foot boat was in the ocean just off shore of Snake Creek, which is in the Upper Florida Keys around mile marker 85, when the fire started, according to a Facebook post from Coast Guard Station Islamorada.
Coast Guard Station Islamorada posted a photo on its Facebook page of the boat completely engulfed in flames.
No one was seriously injured.
The man, woman and dog were “good as gold,” Chief Warrant Officer Scott Goss, Coast Guard Station commanding officer, said in a message to the Miami Herald Wednesday.
The vessel’s owner told the Coast Guard that the fire alarm sounded on his left-side inboard engine. He went below deck to check it out and saw it was on fire.
“The installed fire suppression system had already discharged without effect,” Goss said. “They put on life jackets and jumped in the water.”
Adam Linhardt, spokesman for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, said the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will investigate the cause of the fire.

Boat fire in Gautier still burning but under control - Gautier, MS

Firefighters in Gautier have been monitoring a boat fire that began Tuesday.
As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, fire officials said the fire was ongoing but under control and being monitored closely.
The fire began on a shrimp boat at Pitalo’s Marine in Gautier around 11 a.m. Tuesday on The Noah, which is in dry dock at the marine yard.
Dept. Chief Derek McCoy said firefighters had trouble putting the fire out because of the close quarters of the boat. There were 700 gallons of diesel on the boat. Officials aren’t sure if the diesel is leaking into the bayou or if it’s runoff from the fire hoses washing it out.
The owner was on the boat when the fire started in the engine room. He was able to make a safe escape. A bystander saw the smoke and called 911.
Officials tell WLOX News no on has been injured in the fire, and firefighters have been working to keep it from spreading to other vessels.
