One taken to hospital after flash fire on boat at Port Royale Marina - Atlanta, GA

4/30/2021

A woman was transported to Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital after a flash fire occurred on a boat after refueling at Port Royale Marina on Tuesday, April 27.
Division Chief Jason Shivers with the Forsyth County Fire Department said the fire was accidental and the victim suffered mild-to-moderate injuries, including second-degree burns and a small amount of third-degree burns. A man who was on the boat with the victim refused treatment at the scene.
Shivers said the fire was from gas fumes and “out as soon as it occurred.”
The victim wound up in the lake after the fire, which Shivers said likely limited the damage of the burns.
A helicopter was initially called before being canceled after emergency personnel dealt with the victim’s injuries.
The fire did not spread to the fuel station or any other boats.

Honolulu firefighters extinguished a boat fire at Pier 18 Sunday morning.
HFD said crews were called out around 10:40 a.m. Six units staffed with 23 personnel responded to the fire to find smoke coming out of the wheelhouse of the 35-foot fishing vessel which was moored to the dock.
As firefighters worked to gain control of the fire, six crewmembers including the boat’s Captain were safely moved to the dock.
“The fire attack continued and focused on the wheelhouse and engine room area to ensure the fire did not spread to any onboard auxiliary fuel supply sources,” HFD said.
Four more units with 16 HFD personnel members were called to assist due to the location of the fire. A U.S. Coast Guard boat also arrived to support HFD’s efforts.
The fire was brought under control shortly after 11 a.m.
No one was injured and a cause is under investigation.

Crews responded to the boat ramp at 11:43 a.m. to find a 25-foot cabin cruiser engulfed while still on a trailer attached to a truck.
The department said it battled the fire for about half an hour.
Authorities estimate the fire caused $20,000 of damage to the vessel and about $5,000 of damage to the ramp.
The department believes a backfire combined with gasoline fumes in the engine compartment may be the cause of the fire.

9 people rescued from boat fire in Sarasota - Sarasota, FL

A boating day turned into a disaster when a blaze erupted in Sarasota Bay.
Fire crews and other boaters nearby raced to rescue the nine people on board a fiery boat.
Nine passengers ran into a boatload of trouble while out on the water, Saturday.
“You saw black smoke just come from everywhere off the boat,” said witness Tony Hart.
Police along with fire and rescue crews responded to a 24-foot vessel engulfed in flames in Sarasota.
Officer Michael Skinner said the boat experienced mechanical issues. It began when the boat owner heard the motor sputtering.
“He opened the hood, realized there had been a smoke, turned on the blower, the blower was doing its job removing the smoke from the cabin, he then shut off the boat, turned it on again, began to make way, and the boat shut off. Again, he opened up the hood and realized the vessel was on fire,” said Skinner.
In a matter of minutes, nearby boaters stepped in to help.
“Before we were all in the water, we had boats surrounding us to help us. We had immediate help,” one of the passengers said.
“Some good Samaritans from the Sarasota sailing squadron, local charter captains, and a jet ski were able to get some of the passengers from the vessel that was on fire into their point,” Skinner said.
The fire was put out in less than 10 minutes.
Skinner said boat fires are not common in Sarasota.
“We don’t normally see fires this intense on a monthly or even yearly basis,” Skinner said.
“Actually, it, like, shocked me because I wasn’t expecting it. This is the first time I see something like this happen,” Hart said.
The boat is now beyond repair and sitting in 10 feet of water.
“We’re going to monitor it to make sure it’s not leaking any fluids, fuels or oils to make sure it’s not a marine hazard upon its removal,” Skinner said.
A close call for all on board, but everyone made it back to shore safely.
“Life is good, we’re alive,” a passenger said.
Officials said they need to wait for calmer waters to remove the boat, but they’re hoping to do so by Monday.

The fire started while another man on the boat, Brian Bales, was trying to start the vessel’s engines, according to an FWC report.
Grigsby sustained burns to his torso. His condition was not immediately known. The FWC did not say to which hospital medics took him.
The FWC is investigating the cause of the fire.
