Boat fire causes fuel spill in Portsmouth, now ‘all contained’ - Portsmouth, NH

A 36-foot-long vessel destroyed by fire Saturday morning leaked fuel on Sunday, prompting a response from several agencies.
The Portsmouth Fire Department dispatched several units to New England Boatworks about 12 p.m. for a report of 400 gallons of fuel aboard the vessel possibly leaking onto the travel lift platform and into the water as personnel attempted to recover the boat, said Captain Steven Lynch.
The Department of Environmental Management, Clean Harbors and Marine 6, the Newport Fire Department’s boat, initially responded Sunday, Lynch said. Coast Guard Station Castle Hill was notified of the incident but didn’t respond, according to an officer Sunday.
The Floridian boat, “Little Bird,” was beyond repair but needed to be recovered from the water, Lynch said.
On Saturday the Newport Fire Department received a call to respond around 10:20 a.m. from Jamestown dispatchers, Newport Fire Capt. Jared Minick said previously. The vessel caught fire after it pulled in near the East Ferry Landing in Jamestown, The Daily News previously reported; five firefighters responded on the fire boat, Marine Six, and extinguished the fire before leaving the scene about 11:08 a.m.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Justin Pago said previously that to the agency’s knowledge no one was on board when the fire erupted.
The investigation into the cause of the fire will likely be handled by the state Department of Environmental Management, Minick said previously.
Lynch said his department assisted in the containment of the fuel spill; booms were placed in the water to prevent it from spreading. As of 3 p.m. Sunday the spill was “all contained,” he said. A Portsmouth Fire Department engine remained on scene out of an abundance of caution.

Wyoming PD: Bystanders rescued 2 from boat fire on Comfort Lake - Wyoming, MN

Two women escaped uninjured after their boat caught fire in Chisago County all thanks to the quick actions of some nearby anglers.
It was a frightening start to the boating season for a woman and her mother after their boat caught fire shortly after leaving the launch.
“They heard an explosion come off the back of the boat and it immediately burst into flames,” said Wyoming Police Chief Paul Hoppe.
Wyoming Police shared a photo of the boat engulfed in flames on Comfort Lake that was taken just minutes after the women were rescued by one of the few groups out on the water that day.
“Three guys on a fishing boat heard the small explosion on the boat, turned, noticed the flames coming out of the engine compartment, redirected their boat over to the burning boat and pulled the two gals off the boat,” Hoppe added.
With how quickly the fire moved and the only escape route being frigid waters, the boaters were lucky to be rescued, said Hoppe.
The water is not yet at swimming temperature and Hoppe warned that “hypothermia and exhaustion sets in very quick,” when people enter the water this time of year.
The Chief called the anglers heroes.
“They thought on their feet and leapt into action,” he said. “There was no hesitation and because of that, we have a positive outcome.”
Officials suspect the fire was caused by a gas leak.

Boat in Gravois Mills total loss after fire - Gravois, MO

5/5/2019

Firefighters in Gravois Mills said a boat is a total loss after it caught fire while docked at Millstone Marina off Highway O just before 10 p.m. Saturday.
When the first fire units arrived, the power boat was already engulfed in flames. They were able to extinguish the flames.
The 1986 Wellcraft twin-engine power boat had just been acquired by the owner.
Emergency crews reported that the owner had recently fueled the boat and started one engine. When he went to start the second, the boat ignited.
Firefighters ruled the fire as accidental and blamed fuel vapors, which ignited when the owner started the engines.
The Rocky Mount Fire District assisted the Gravois Fire Department. The scene was cleared by 11 p.m.
