Crews responded to a boat fire at Kuttawa Harbor on Sunday, May 29.
According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, they responded to the scene around 11:55 a.m., along with the Kuttawa Fire Department, Lyon County EMS and Lyon County Search and Rescue.
According to the sheriff’s office, a large boat had just refueled at the marina and had about 300 gallons of fuel on board when it caught fire.
They said when they arrived, they found the marina crews had removed the boat from the fueling dock and towed it to the breaker wall away from the marina.
Sheriff’s office personnel and other first responders kept bystanders back as fire crews worked to extinguish the fire and assess the damage.
No injuries were reported and the crew at Kuttawa Harbor was credited with acting quickly enough to keep the fire away from other boats and vessels.
The investigation into the fire will continue by the Kuttawa Fire Department and KDFWR officers.

14 injured, 1 critically after boat explodes during refueling on Illinois River, authorities say - LaSalle County, IL

Multiple people are injured after a boat exploded on the Illinois River in the southwest suburbs Saturday, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said.

Conservation police, as well as state troopers, responded after reports of a boat fire on the Illinois River just before 4:30 p.m. at the Spring Brook Marina in LaSalle County, according to Illinois State Police.

The incident occurred about 4:20 p.m., the IDNR said Sunday. A 40-foot vessel with 17 people on board had just completed fueling. Based on interviews and a review of video footage, authorities said it appears the explosion happened from inside the vessel.

Several families were on the boat, about to get ready to head out on the water when the boat exploded while they were fueling, conservation police said. Thirteen people from the boat were taken to local hospitals to be treated for injuries, the DNR said. One of them was flown to a Chicago hospital with critical injuries. A marine employee also was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

The DNR said information about the identities of the people involved will not yet be released.

The Illinois Conservation Police are leading the investigation with assistance from the Illinois State Police and the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office.

The river is open, but boaters are urged to drive cautiously near the site because the sunken vessel has not been removed from the water. The boat is still in the water as officers work to contain the fuel.

Authorities and representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are at the scene assisting with recovery operations, which are expected to be completed sometime Sunday afternoon.

The Coast Guard rescued seven boaters and a dog from a vessel fire near Gulfport, Mississippi, Saturday morning.
Coast Guard Sector Mobile watchstanders received a mayday call over marine radio at 9:26 a.m. of a 45-foot Hatteras on fire with seven people and a dog aboard.
A Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew diverted to the call which arrived on scene and deployed a rescue life raft. Watchstanders coordinated the launch of a Coast Guard Station Gulfport 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew to rescue the boaters.
“The prudent actions of those aboard the Hatteras – hailing mayday to the Coast Guard and all personnel wearing life jackets, coupled with the quick actions of the aircrew deploying the life raft, ultimately allowed the Coast Guard to bring all seven back to shore safely." said Lt. Cmdr. Kathleen Sullivan, a Sector Mobile search and rescue mission coordinator. "This case was a seamless example of teamwork and coordination between multiple different Coast Guard and local assets."

The Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire in Middle Harbor on Monday after smoke was spotted coming from a docked boat.
The fire was on the Lady Lou, owned by Terry Slafter, and came from the oil stove on board, according to Assistant Fire Chief Dave Berg.
Berg said the stove may have had an installation problem that was a result of age and use and it appeared to have fallen down on one side.
The area underneath and surrounding the stove was charred.
According to Berg, it appeared that Slafter, who lives aboard the boat, woke up to smoke in the cabin.

Two narrowly escape boat engine fire off Rhode River - Whitemarsh Creek, MD

5/6/2022

Two boaters are safe after their 37-foot powerboat caught fire on the way to the dock Friday morning, leading to an explosion that could be heard for miles around.
Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) says the two males were trying to dock their Monterey boat at Holiday Hill Marina in Whitemarsh Creek, just off the Rhode River in Edgewater. One of the boat’s engines failed. When one tried to restart the engine, the boat caught fire. Luckily, both were close enough to a nearby pier to jump off before the boat became fully engulfed.
The Anne Arundel County, Annapolis City, and Woodland Beach Volunteer fire departments all responded along with NRP and helped put out the fire.
The two boaters were taken to a local trauma center for what NRP calls “precautionary measures” and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
NRP is investigating the incident and has not yet determined a cause.
Captain John Martino from our sister company, the Annapolis School of Seamanship, tell us that in some cases gasoline vapors can collect in a boat’s bilge while the engine is off, potentially creating an explosion.
In this case, Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department reports the explosion could be heard and felt all across the Edgewater area.
