Emergency crews respond to boat fire at Dauphin Island - Dauphin Island, AL

6/30/2018

Emergency crews from multiple agencies on Saturday evening responded to a boat fire at Dauphin Island.
There were no injuries, according to Dauphin Island Fire Chief Brad Cox. Everyone was off the boat -- which is the Emerald Key, a 45-foot fishing vessel -- when emergency responders arrived on the scene, Cox said.
Cox said the call came in at 6:11 p.m. that there was a boat on fire in the channel in the Dauphin Island Bay.
He said it appears a systems failure caused the fire.
That's near the Dauphin Island Harbor House, in the water just off Hubert Street and Cadillac Avenue in an area from the marina to Billy Goat Hole.
Cox said the boat was tied or anchored in the channel.
Fowl River firefighters, the U.S. Coast Guard and Dauphin Island Fire all responded, and the fire was extinguished.
Cox said the channel is going to be closed while the Coast Guard checks for environmental problems. Then they will call the owner to remove the vessel, Cox said.

Four people suffered minor burns to their legs after escaping a boat fire on Canandaigua Lake Saturday afternoon.
The boat fire took place around 4:30 pm, near Kershaw Park, at the north end of the lake.
Ontario County Sheriff's deputies said the department's marine unit was on scene in less than one minute.
Firefighters escorted to the boat were able to use fire extinguishers to put the flames out, according to deputies.
The four people on board, along with their three dogs, all managed to escape.
The cause of the fire appears to be an accident, due to a mechanical issue.
According to deputies, Eugene Allaire, 56, said when he started the boat, the engine compartment and rear floor area caught fire.

A couple married for 60 years managed to escape from a fire on their house boat Friday around 12:30 p.m. at the Clarksville Marina at Liberty Park.
Shortly after Robert and Yvonne Workman pulled their house boat away from the dock, about 200 yards into the channel, the right motor shut down. As they tried to restart the motor, something exploded and the fire erupted.
As Mr. Workman grabbed a fire extinguisher and headed toward the fire, it only took a moment to determine the fire was too large to put out with the extinguisher he had.
The Workmans donned their life vests and safely abandoned ship, which quickly became fully engulfed with flames. Clarksville Fire Rescue arrived on scene and put out the fire.
Police said the reason for the fire has not yet been determined.

Giant plumes of black smoke billowed from the 8 Mile Marker as a 29-foot boat burned on Saturday evening.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 29-year-old Tyler Anthony, of Olathe, Kan., was driving the 2001 Sea Ray 2900 downstream, around the 8.2 Mile Marker — not far from Gator Point & Toad Cove, at the end of Horseshoe Bend — when the boat caught fire. The Patrol did not specify what caused the fire, simply stating it was fuel-related but not propulsion/generator related, however the boat was underway when it caught fire, not at a dock or refueling.

The occupants were all able to escape the boat unharmed. The fire was extinguished and the Sea Ray was towed to shore by Lake Tow. However, the boat burst into flames multiple times again at the shore, scorching a nearby tree. Lake Tow’s crew was able to pull the boat far enough away that the nearby home was undamaged.

Cleveland fire crews were called out to Edgewater Yacht Club Saturday evening when a 27-foot sailing there caught on  fire.
The Fire Boat Anthony J Celebrezze, along with Cleveland Engine Company 21, assisted in putting the fire out. The Coast Guard was called in  to help establish a safety zone around the area while fire crews worked.
No one was injured, but the boat, which was estimated to be worth $30,000,  was destroyed and eventually sunk.
The cause is believed to be accidental, as the boat's owner was working on an electrical issue on the boat before the fire began.
