A boat at the Tidewater Marina was fully involved Friday night, according to initial reports received by the Susquehanna Hose Company. Firefighters were at the scene responding to the incident after 11 p.m. on Friday, June 28.
A docked 30 to 40-foot boat off the 100 block of Bourbon Street was the scene of fire activity, the hose company reported.
A woman who identified herself as the person who called 911 said there were not any flames, but she posted a photo to the Havre de Grace Patch Facebook page that appeared to show smoke at the marina. She said that first responders "were on site immediately."
The Susquehanna Hose Company said that its engine crews and the company's rescue boat were dispatched to the incident.

Two Boats Destroyed in Fire at Lake Tashmoo - Lake Tashmoo, MA

6/24/2019

Two boats were destroyed in a fire at Lake Tashmoo Sunday morning at about 3:10 a.m., Tisbury fire chief John Schilling told the Gazette Monday. Both vessels, a 32-foot Pursuit and a 28-foot Cape Dory, were a total loss.

Conditions were challenging. — Courtesy Tisbury Fire Department.By the time the call came in, both boats were fully engulfed in flames, Chief Schilling said. Tisbury fire, police and EMS responded.
The chief said the boats were tied together at the south side of the pier at Tashmoo boatyard. First responders were able to release the other boats on the north side of the pier to prevent them from being damaged, Chief Schilling said.
He described a scene where firefighters brought the truck down the boat ramp and fought the fires from shore using lake water. Eventually though, the lines were burned and the boats began to drift out into the lake, he said. Firefighters waited for the wind to blow the boats back in, and subsequently secured them on shore before dousing the boats again.
Chief Schilling said the pier sustained minimal damage and there were no injuries or spills from the fires.
But he said the circumstances of the fires made them difficult to fight. Visibility was one major challenge with wind blowing smoke and debris toward shore.
“There were times we couldn’t see our firefighters at the end of the dock,” the fire chief said.
Getting the response vehicles to the scene was also challenging.
“We only had a little wider than width of truck access to scene,” Mr. Schilling said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, the chief said.

40-ft. Trawler Is Gutted in 2-Hour Fire By Moody Ramp Under Flagler Beach Bridge - Flagler, FL

The trawler had started its journey in DeLand. It began smoking near the Flagler Beach bridge, where its pilot docked it and got off as the flames went out of control. Two hours later the boat was totaled. Click on the image for larger view. (© FlaglerLive)
A 40-ft. trawler that had begun its journey on the St. Johns River and was making its way south was gutted by fire this afternoon, burning for some two hours as firefighters fought the blaze under the Flagler Beach bridge at Moody Boat Launch. No one was injured.
“At 2:34 [p.m.], units were dispatched to a boat fire here at Moody Boat Ramp. The first arriving units on scene reported a 40-foot trawler with heavy fire at the stern of the boat,” said Capt. Steve Cox, who was in command of the scene for the Flagler Beach Fire Department. Initial units responding included Battalion 11, Rescue 11 and Ladder 11. “We pulled an attack line and made a direct attack to the rear of the boat. We got the fire knocked down but since it was so well involved prior to our arrival, it appeared to be running underneath the hull. So it took an extended operation just to get the fire under control under the hull of the boat.”
The operation was “pretty unique,” Cox said: Flagler County Fire Rescue assisted, but so did the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, whose Marine Unit boat helped: “We actually put firefighters on their boat and got to do an attack from the other side,” Cox said. Firefighters were also in the water–it was that shallow–pouring water on the flames.

The gas-powered boat had little furl on board, which was fortunate since it limited environmental concerns and intervention by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, whose officers were also on the scene, investigating.
FWC’s Lt. Scott Dack said the boat had just been sold to new owners. (The boat’s name was not yet released, as the owners had not been reached to be informed of the blaze: it wasn’t even visible on the boat anymore.) The man who’d sold the boat to the new owner was actually piloting the boat, transporting it from DeLand, on the St. Johns River to Jacksonville, then down the Intracoastal Waterway, Dack said. He said the pilot turned back at one point and saw flames. He drifted the boat toward the dock. “When it swung close to the boat, he jumped off,” Dack said, after trying to put out the flames.
“When it started it was just smoking,” the pilot told Cox, “then when I opened it up and I looked and I realized it looked like I seen a couple of flames coming out. I emptied the whole extinguisher on it.” The boat was gas-powered.
“Luckily it all worked out,” Dack said, “it was close enough for a fire department to get to it, close enough to get to safety, no injuries to anybody. That’s a plus. Financially, it’s going to hurt somebody.”
The pier and Moody launch were closed to traffic once the fire broke out. By a little after 5 p.m., firefighters were on the boat, its flames entirely out. It appeared to be listing and resting on the bottom. The state fire marshal was on the way to investigate, Cox said.
As for towing the boat, “that’s going to be the owner,” Dack said. “It’s the owner’s responsibility to clear that.”

Father’s Day cruise abruptly ends after fire erupts in the engine room - Tampa, FL

6/16/2019

A Father's Day cruise was abruptly cut short on Sunday after a fire erupted in the engine room.
No one was injured, but a lot of people were scared when a fire started on-board the Yacht StarShip dinner cruise leaving Sparkman Wharf.

Passengers described hearing a “boom” then smelling smoke. Minutes later, crews alerted them to a fire in the engine room. They were handed life jackets and told to go to the top deck as the yacht turned around and returned to shore.

“Once we smelled the smoke we knew it was not good,” Rich Canner said. Canner was celebrating Father’s Day on the boat with his wife and four children.
“One guy came in real quick kind of almost knocked somebody over got the fire extinguisher ran back, and you could start smelling the smoke,” Canner said.
Jason Penny with the Tampa Fire Department said their crews responded within minutes. When firefighters boarded the boat, the fire in the engine room was already out.
Passengers said the captain and crew did a good job keeping everyone informed.
“Everybody was calm, the crew had everything under control, so everything overall is good,” Mehdi Belhassan said. “As long as we are with our kids we love it doesn’t matter. They started running to fire and bringing fire extinguishers, and we made a u-turn and came back to port.”
"Today during our second Father’s Day Brunch Cruise Yacht StarShip had to return to the dock as a small fire broke out in the engine room. The fire was immediately contained. There were no injuries or threat to the passengers or crew aboard. However, in abundance of caution Yacht StarShip’s Captain returned to the dock and safely evacuated all passengers. Safety is always our top priority,” Jennifer Richardson told ABC Action News reporter Michael Paluska.
Richardson said all passengers would get a refund and gift certificate to take another dinner cruise.
The Coast Guard will investigate what caused the fire and if there were any violations on the boat.

Carbon monoxide scare in Gardner - Gardner, MA

6/15/2019

A potentially deadly situation was apparently defused early Friday morning by the Gardner Fire Department at the Gardner Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
According to the Gardner Fire Department in a Facebook posting, in the early morning crews from Group 2 responded for a fire alarm activation at the 59 Eastwood Circle facility. When they arrived they had no fire alarms sounding but there were multiple carbon monoxide detectors alarming throughout the building at about 1:30.
Fire crews gas meters immediately began to read “dangerously high amounts” of the deadly gas.
“Crews immediately went on air and located the source of the Carbon Monoxide coming from the boiler room. The source was a boiler malfunction,” according to the social media posting by the fire department.
Crews made their way to the upper floors to check carbon monoxide readings where the patients were housed.
“Crews detected elevated readings on all floors and immediately began to open all windows and place positive pressure fans through out the upper floors to keep the deadly gas away from the patients and staff,” the posting said.
More personnel with additional fans were dispatched to the facility.
Multiple ambulances stood by in case an evacuation was needed. It took crews more that two hours to vent the facility and return readings to a safe level.
“All of the staff and patients were checked with our RAD 57 to check if they had any Carbon Monoxide readings in their bodies, but luckily everyone checked out ok with no CO readings found in them,” the post said.
The fire department posting on Facebook noted, “This incident shows the Importance of having Carbon Monoxide detectors in your homes. Had their been no Carbon Monoxide detectors in this facility, this incident would have turned out much worse. Please keep your family safe and make sure all of your Carbon Monoxide detectors are working properly!!”
Catherine Fontaine, executive director of the nursing facility, Saturday morning said there were 114 patients and 20 staff in the building at the time of the incident. No one was harmed and the boiler was fixed early Friday morning.
“I can’t say enough about the professionalism of the Gardner Police and Fire departments,” she said.

Boat Explosion Injures Five People At Lake Of The Ozarks Marina - Lake of the Ozarks, MO

6/15/2019

Five people were reportedly injured in a boat explosion at Millstone Marina & RV Resort on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 25 ft. Chris Craft exploded at approximately 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, at the marina on the 7 Mile Marker, in Laurie.
According to Gravois Fire Protection District (GFPD) Fire Chief Ed Hancock, firefighters were toned out at 1:54 p.m. and they were the first to arrive on the scene.
“The explosion occurred shortly after filling the boat with gasoline,” Missouri State Highway Patrolman Scott White reported. “They had untied from the dock and based on preliminary information there was a flash fire, that fired up and extinguished just as quickly.”
Photos show the flash fire separated the top cap of the boat from the hull.
Gravois Fire Protection District firefighters arrived on the scene to find five people with injuries. “We assisted with triage and provided basic emergency care,” Chief Hancock said. “We determined who was the most injured and briefed the incoming ambulances on who [had the most serious injuries], and then they were transported for a higher level of care.”
GFPD personnel also ensured there were enough ambulances. Lake West Ambulance and Mercy Ambulance responded and transported patients to hospitals and a Staff for Life Medical Helicopter. One patient with more serious injuries was transported to the hospital by Staff for Life. GFPD personnel also assisted with ground support at the helicopter landing pad, located at the GFPD G7 Station on Route O, just a few miles from Millstone Marina. Mid Mo Ambulance was cancelled in route. Rocky Mount Fire Protection District responded with their fire boat but were also cancelled in route.
