Officials are trying to determine what sparked a fire on a 36-foot boat Tuesday night at the north end of Lake Washington.
Crews responded to the scene, the North Lake Marina in Kenmore on NE 175th Street, at around 11 p.m. after receiving reports of a possible fire.
Light smoke was coming from the boat when first responders arrived, then flames erupted.
Officials say it took about 45 minutes to extinguish the fire
One person was aboard the vessel when the blaze broke out. That person was able to get off safely and there were no injuries reported.
Authorities say teams are now watching to make sure runoff from the firefight does not contaminate the water at the marina.

Looking at the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning while boating - Cleveland, OH

6/29/2021

The 4th of July weekend draws boaters to the water in droves, all hoping to enjoy themselves and take in the fresh air. However, sometimes that air can be a problem.
“Unfortunately, because you are out in the open, people are lulled into a false sense of security because they figure nothing is going to hit them out in the open,” says TJ Martin, with the Parma Fire Department.
Martin says carbon monoxide poisoning while boating is more common than you’d think. In fact, just recently we learned it contributed to the drowning death of University of Cincinnati student and Strongsville native, Allyson Sidloski.
Also, just last week, Coast Guard officers reported high carbon monoxide levels near the boat where they found 3 people unresponsive. All of whom, later died.
“It’s an odorless, tasteless gas so you don’t know it’s actually there until it’s too late,” says BM2, Nicholas Durfey, with the U.S. Coast Guard.
While when most people think of carbon monoxide and boating, they think of the back of the boat near the exhaust fumes. While that could be a problematic spot, it’s not always the main culprit. Martin and Durfey point out that in board engines, batteries, generators, and engine compartments all have the potential to release the dangerous gas. The way the boat is positioned on the water also plays a role is where the gas ends up. The important thing is knowing what to look out for, but unfortunately, the symptoms are similar to sea sickness.
Durfey says, “You’re not feeling good, you have a headache. You’re feeling nauseous.”
“Blurry visions, queasy stomach or nausea are things again associated with being on boats so we may misdiagnose those,” says Martin.
Both Martin and Durfey say the best thing to do is get the person to fresh air as quickly as possible and call authorities. They also recommend marine grade carbon monoxide detectors be installed on all boats, because most of the time you just don’t know it’s there, until it’s too late.
“If you’re in a confined space or if you’re up in it close, you’re not necessarily going to smell it but you’re getting a full face exposure to carbon monoxide,” says Durfey.
Martin says, “A lot of times deaths can be attributed to drowning when in essence they were quite possibly caused by carbon monoxide from the boat.”

Boaters forced to swim to shore after craft catches fire on Lake Monona, authorities say - Lake Monona, WI

Three boaters jumped ship Monday night after their craft caught fire on Lake Monona, authorities reported.
Just before 11:30 p.m., the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Madison Fire Department and Madison Police responded to a caller who saw a boat on fire and heard people screaming, Sgt. Kyle Keller said in a report.
The 17-foot 1976 Sundance boat was a few hundred feet from the shoreline near the 100 block of East Wilson Street when it caught fire, he said.
The owner unsuccessfully tried to extinguish the flames with an on-board extinguisher, but he and the two others had to jump into the water and swim to safety, Keller said.
The Fire Department Lake Rescue Team launched from Olin Park and reached the burning boat as it was slowly drifting toward a floating dock, spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster said. The rescue boat can deliver up to 500 gallons of water per minute, and it quickly knocked down the fire and used the water pressure to push the boat closer to shore at Law Park, where it was secured with rope.
The owner told firefighters he had recently purchased the boat and it was operating fine. After turning off the engine for a while, he attempted to restart it, but after a few tries, the motor flashed, sparking the fire and forcing them to abandon it, Schuster said.
No injuries were reported, but the boat was a total loss, with $2,500 in estimated damage.

One person was hospitalized following a small explosion on a boat at a Spring Lake marina Monday.
It happened around 1:30 p.m. at a marina off W. Savidge Drive near the Savidge bridge in the village of Spring Lake.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says a boater pulled in to refuel. When he was preparing to leave, he started the engine and there was a small explosion in the engine compartment.
That sparked a fire that bystanders were able to smother with fire extinguishers.
The boater, a Rockford man, and his passengers, which included several children, quickly got off the boat. One of them, a 63-year-old Holland woman, was hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Coroner: Carbon monoxide contributed to death of UC soccer player at East Fork Lake - Batavia Township, OH

6/25/2021

Carbon monoxide contributed to the death of 21-year-old Allyson Sidloski at East Fork State Park, a coroner said Friday.
Sidloski, of Strongsville, was a student-athlete on the soccer team for the University of Cincinnati.
She disappeared under the water while boating on May 22, her body found a day later.According to a report from the Clermont County Coroner released Friday, Sidloski's death has been ruled as a drowning. However, officials said that carbon monoxide inhalation was a contributing factor to her death.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources said Sidloski was hanging onto the swim platform of a boat before she disappeared into the water.
Now, officials say she likely inhaled carbon monoxide from the boat, which caused her to dip below the water.
She was not wearing a life jacket.
Sidloski was a standout soccer player, who recently completed her sophomore season for the Bearcats. She did not play during the 2020 season, which took place during the spring of 2021, due to injury.
She was also a standout in the classroom, being named a TopCat scholar in multiple semesters for achieving a 4.0 GPA.
She made her collegiate debut against East Carolina in 2019 and played in UC's American Athletic Conference Tournament opener against SMU. She was tabbed for Academic All-AAC honors following the 2019 campaign and redshirted as a true freshman in 2018.
She was the third member of her family to play soccer at the collegiate level, following her father David (Cleveland State) and sister Katie (Indiana State and Cleveland State).
Sidloski is survived by her parents David and Tracie and two sisters, Katie and Nicole.

2 men, 1 child dead after boating incident on Lake Erie; carbon monoxide poisoning suspected - Cleveland, OH

Two men and a child are dead after an incident on Lake Erie where a boat had to be towed in by the United States Coast Guard Wednesday evening, according to Cleveland police.
Around 7:30 p.m., authorities responded to the 1000 block of East 9th Street at the Coast United States Coast Guard Station for three individuals found unresponsive on a boat.
The Coast Guard located the boat and towed it to the Coast Guard Station from approximately two miles out from shore.
Cleveland police said a 76-year-old man and a 40-year-old man on the boat were pronounced dead at the scene.
An 11-year-old boy was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center in critical condition but was later pronounced dead.
Cleveland Fire said all three individuals were in full arrest when located and CPR was administered.
On Thursday morning, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified the victims as:
  • Frank A. Opaskar, 76, of Avon Lake
  • Christopher Kedas, 45, or Huron
  • Owen Kedas, 11, of Huron
Authorities said that carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected.
Jordan Schultz was fishing with two friends on Lake Erie, and called the Coast Guard and took video with his cellphone, as the boat was speeding toward his boat, seemingly out-of-control.“I was fishing, and we were like, we just start honking the horn and the guy couldn’t see us because his bow was so high up in the air," Schultz said. "And after that, we just turned around and looked and we were like oh my God I don’t think anybody is at the wheel.”
“We got the binoculars out after we noticed there was nobody at the wheel, and it looked like a guy was just slumped over.”
The Cuyahoga Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death.
