Crews battle boat fire on Lake Winnipesaukee - Laconia, NH

7/27/2019

Fire crews responded to Lake Winnipesaukee after a boat engine exploded, sparking fierce flames.
The fire broke out just before 4 p.m. near Weirs Beach when its engine compartment exploded and shot into the air, sending plumes of dark smoke rising into the sky with it.
Captain Bob Duffey was aboard the Mount Washington cruise ship when the fire broke out and said his crew quickly jumped into action to try and put out the fire.
“The engine compartment of the boat shot up in the air about 20 feet,” Duffey said. “Fire started immediately.”
Duffey said his crew was able to get the fire under control.
Bystanders on personal watercraft vessels were able to drag the steaming ship away from the beach before fire crews arrived.
Several people were on the boat at the time of the fire and jumped into the water to avoid injury.
“We encouraged them to swim over towards us,” Duffey said. “Our ship was docked about 30, 40 feet away from where it was and once that fire started it was extremely dangerous because it was going to float over towards us or it was floating into a marina loaded with boats.”
Duffey said he is proud of his crew for their quick thinking.
“I am very proud of them, they are just young men and, as I said, we do an awful lot of training to make sure the vessel is safe and that training paid off.”
One girl was taken to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Investigators are working to determine what caused the explosion.

A yacht caught fire Friday morning while dry-docked at a marina in Fort Lauderdale, authorities said.
According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan, multiple units responded to the scene at 2200 Marina Bay Drive to battle the flames on the 2001 70-foot Sunseeker Manhattan.
Sky 10 was above the scene around 11:15 a.m. as firefighters doused the boat, which was out of the water and surrounded by other, smaller boats.
People reported seeing smoke from the fire from Interstate 595 in Plantation and up and down Interstate 95, as well.
It took 60 firefighters about 10 minutes to get the fire under control and about 30 minutes to extinguish it, Gollan said.
Authorities said one other boat was damaged due to the intense heat coming from the yacht.
According to firefighters, workers were aboard the yacht when the fire started, but quickly got off and were not injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Authorities are working on notifying the yacht owner about the fire, as they said the owner is not currently in the area.

Jackson County SAR; boating-related deaths in Oregon hits ten-year high - Emigrant Lake, OR

7/25/2019

After a beautiful week, many locals may be heading to lakes and rivers to beat the heat this weekend.
But with boating-related deaths on the rise across Oregon, marine deputies want to remind you to always be safe and prepared for your day out on the water.
Jackson County Search and Rescue says there’s been 14 boating-related deaths across the state of Oregon; three of those were in Jackson County. That’s the highest, they say, in the last decade.
“Well, I’m a good swimmer. We’ll no not necessarily when you’re out there in the middle of the lake,” said Scott Macleod, a boater.
Macleod moved to Oregon 14 years ago and says he’s been tethered to his boat ever since.
But you’ll never catch him on the water unprepared.
“It’s going to save lives… throw cushions, extinguishers, you just never know,” he said. “I might not need it for me, but for somebody else.”
With boating-related deaths on the rise across Oregon, Jackson County Search and Rescue Sgt. Shawn Richards says safety should be a top priority.
“It’s been a long time since we had a smoke-free summer, knock on wood, so there may be more people out recreating,” he said.
In June, Sgt. Richards says two brothers drowned in Lost Creek Lake. Neither were wearing life jackets.
“It’s just an absolute tragedy,” he said.
Earlier this week, a man was pulled underwater by his boat’s anchor rope in Shady Cove. While the sheriff’s office says he was wearing an inflatable life jacket, it wasn’t inflated.
“We always suggest people on any kind of a current wear an inherently buoyant life jacket, so one that if you fall overboard you’re wearing it… there’s nothing you have to do to activate it or anything like that,” Sgt. Richards said.
There are other tips Sgt. Richards says could save your life:
A whistle is a great way to signal for help, always carry a fire extinguisher in case your boat catches fire, have a knife on hand to free you or your boat from any entanglement, and turn off your boat’s engine when you’re getting in and out.
“This year we’ve had one case where two people were lost in the northern end of the state due to carbon monoxide poisoning,” he said. “And they were simply riding at idle on the very back of the boat.”
As for the people we spoke with on the water… they all agree… being prepared is the best way to focus on the fun.
“If they have a life jacket… it’s going to save lives,” said Macleod.

Teenagers help rescue two people after boat catches fire on Oneida Lake - Oneida Lake, NY

7/23/2019

Two people have been rescued after their boat caught fire on Oneida Lake near Frenchman Island on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office.
18-year-old Maddy Allen and her cousin, 19-year-old Jacob Harrig, reached the two boaters before any rescue crews could reach the burning boat.

The two teenagers were riding their WaveRunner when they saw the black smoke. At first, they thought it was a house fire. When they realized the boat was on fire, Allen and Harrig zipped closer to the boat to offer help.
"When we got closer to the boat, that's when the couple actually jumped into the water, and they saw us and started screaming for help," Allen says.
Allen and Harrig felt a bit helpless since they did not have a craft big enough to carry the people. But, they knew they could at least attempt to get the two passengers away from the boat. The current also helped, as it pushed the boat away from them.
"The couple came over and started to climb on, and eventually, a fisherman boat came over and helped us out," Allen says.
The passengers on the burning boat were wearing life jackets when they jumped into the water. But, Allen says the couple looked shocked, and so was she.
"We've been coming up here for years obviously to visit my grandpa. I've never seen a boat on fire, and I was kinda scared. I felt bad, so we just had to go over and make sure everyone was okay," Allen says.
Allen says it wasn't a hard decision for her and Harrig to help out.
"Well I know if I was in that situation, I would definitely want someone to come over and help us," Allen says.
No injuries have been reported yet. The investigation is ongoing.
This story is developing and will be updated.
