Two passengers injured in Lake Wawasee boat fire - Kosciusko County, IN

7/25/2021

Two passengers are injured after a boat caught on fire on Lake Wawasee on Saturday just before 3 pm, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.
The fire took place near the Wawasee Boat Company around 2:55 pm.
The two passengers injured from the fire suffered second-degree burns and were transported to a Fort Wayne hospital.
All eight occupants, including the operator of the boat, were able to make it safely on-shore.
Initial investigation reveals that a Cabin Cruiser with two inboard engines caught on fire when the owner tried to start the boat after fueling it, according to the DNR. The owner advised the DNR that he did vent the watercraft with blowers before starting the engine, according to the report.
The Syracuse Fire Department was able to quickly contain the fire. The watercraft did sink in the lake, DNR states.
Conservation officers want to remind boat owners and operators to run bilge blowers before starting inboard engines for the entire time recommended by the boat’s manufacture. All non-open type vessels built after 1980 that are gas-powered are required to have functional bilge blowers, according to the United States Coast Guard.

Authorities say a 38-foot sailboat caught on fire several miles off the coast of St. Augustine. After crews responded to the scene they were able to safely extinguish the fire.
Crews on scene say it was an electrical cabin fire.
The man that was on board was able to launch his dinghy to get on the good Samaritan's boat and escape the fire, according to the fire department.
SFD, Station Mayport, St. Augustine police and the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office all assisted on scene.
The boat is currently being towed into the St. Augustine inlet.
No injuries were reported during the incident and authorities have not found a cause for the fire at this time.

Boat Catches Fire in Dana Point Harbor - East Basin, CA

Officials put out a boat fire in Dana Point Harbor Friday night, July 16 in the East Basin.
The harbor patrol with Orange County Sheriff’s Department received reports of the fire at 8:40 p.m. involving the vessel Afficionado—which had been unoccupied at her slip. Orange County Fire Authorities coordinated and took over response and put out the flames by 8:52 p.m.
“Authorities used foam to prevent the fire from spreading and used a boom around the vessel to prevent pollution and sinking,” said OCSD’s public affairs director Carrie Braun. “There were no reported injuries to staff or the public.”
The registered owner was notified and arrived on scene. Braun added that there were no issues with hazardous materials or pollution during response.
“Harbor patrol responded first and applied water,” said OCFA Fire Captain Sean Doran. “OCFA arrived in coordination with arbor patrol and used power tools and saws to get to the fire.”
California State lifeguards were also on scene to ensure the safety of firefighters.
Doran added that the cause for the fire was an unintentional electrical issue. Power tools were used to get to the source of the fire within void spaces of the vessel.
“The operation was a success and we were able to keep the vessel afloat, which is always a priority with vessel fires,” said Doran.

Fire destroyed seven boats and damaged five others before dawn Friday at a marina on Southern California’s Lake Arrowhead, authorities said.
Some of the boats burned through the lines tying them to the dock and floated freely, threatening to spread damage, San Bernardino County fire authorities said in a social media post.
Crews used a fire boat to hose down the flames and corral the boats. The dock also sustained major damage before the flames were knocked down.
A hazardous materials team also responded because of the possibility that fluids and other hazards might affect the lake.
Lake Arrowhead is a scenic tourist destination high in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles.

It happened Friday around 2 p.m. in Thunder Bay.
The two people on board the 18-foot boat called Mayday and agencies worked together using the Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB).
A Good Samaritan, who was an off-duty firefighter and paramedic from Green Bay, Wisconsin, helped rescued the boaters and started giving them medical care.
The victims were taken by the Good Samaritan to the shore to meet the ambulance.
A 55-year-old man was burned in the fire, while a second person on board was treated for less severe injuries.
M/V Lady Michigan, a commercial tour vessel in the area heard the call for help and was able to help extinguish the fire.
“Today’s events were a reminder that UMIBs save lives,” said Captain Anthony Jones, Sector Commander. “The Coast Guard cannot perform its missions alone across the vast maritime environment. We are grateful for the maritime public and the assistance they provided.”Alpena County Sheriff deputies, U.S. Coast Guard and Michigan DNR conservation officers were all involved with handling the boat fire.

Boat explosion injures boaters, game wardens at Lake Mead - Las Vegas, NV

A boat explosion at Lake Mead National Recreation Area sent five people to the hospital on Saturday.
About 2:30 p.m. on July 10, a 30-foot boat pushed away from the boat launch exploded at the Las Vegas Boat Harbor & Lake Mead Marino, officials said.
Three Nevada Dept. of Wildlife game wardens and two trainees helped aid the two boaters and the first warden on scene pushed the vessel away from the boaters.
One of the boaters was life-flighted to a nearby trauma center while the other was taken by ambulance.
Two game wardens and one trainee were also hospitalized for smoke inhalation and other injuries. They were treated and released and are now at home recovering, according to Doug Nielsen, conservation education supervisor of NDOW. More
"This was a cabin-style boat with an inboard-outboard motor, which means that the motor was enclosed," said Nielsen. "We don't know exactly what happened here, but every year before a boater goes on the water, they should check all their electrical connections, they should check their fuel components."
No other property was damaged, a representative from the NPS said, and the boat was removed from the location.
“Incidents such as these are incredibly tragic,” said NDOW Lieutenant Chris Walther in a media release. “Thankfully, our game wardens were on scene quickly and were able to provide life-saving aid.”
Fueling services have since resumed.
