​EARLEVILLE — Maryland Natural Resources Police is investigating a Saturday night boat explosion on the Bohemia River that has killed one person.
Michael Steinmetz, 69, from Essex, was identified by Capt. Brent Trautman. 
The captain said Natural Resources Police and a Good Samaritan tried to save Steinmetz but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chief Jason Reamy with Cecilton Volunteer Fire Company said the call came at 7:12 p.m. and brought first responders to the area of Veazey Cove
"DNR was first one there," Reamy said, adding Hack's Point Volunteer Fire Company got the call and Cecilton VFC went to assist.
Reamy said two people were on board the 33 foot boat and were brought to Cherry Grove Road.
"They pronounced one person dead and the second person was a patient refusal," Reamy said.
Trautman is asking that anyone with eyewitness accounts, photos or videos of the incident to share that information with investigators.

A male was burned after a reported boat fire on Friday afternoon according to Norwalk officials.
Norwalk Fire Department says they responded to 48 Calkf Pasture Rd at the Cove Marina around 3:10 p.m.
Two Engine Companies and a Command car went to the scene, and spotted a 30-foot cabin cruiser-style recreational watercraft with heavy fire showing on their arrival.
The Fire Department said the fire was located from the rear of the vessel. The fire was extinguished and overhauled taking about 20 minutes to put out.
EMS cared for the male patient and transported them. Fire officials have not stated how severe their burns were at this time.
Norwalk Police assisted on this fire with de-watering from firefighting operations. The staff of Cove Marina hauled the boat from the water.
Fire Inspector Luca Feola is investigating the origin and cause.

 A boat explosion at a Whittier boat launch Wednesday afternoon left a woman injured and a cat dead, and caused significant road and marine transportation delays, a city official said.
The explosion happened around 3:15 p.m., with the recreational boat “engulfed in a fireball” that sent a billowing cloud of black smoke into the air above the harbor, according to City Manager Jim Hunt.
A woman on the boat was burned and further injured when she tried to rescue a cat, Hunt said. She was evacuated by air to an Anchorage hospital but is expected to survive, he said. The cat died, he said. No other people were onboard.
The boat had just been launched and was tied to the float ramp when it caught fire, he said. The woman was onboard while her husband went to park the trailer, said Joe Corbett, acting head of the Whittier Police Department. The boat was an older model, likely made in the 1980s or 70s, and was about 28 feet long and made from fiberglass, he said.
First responders from Whittier, Girdwood and the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel helped extinguish the fire. Corbett said the blaze was out in less than an hour.
“It took a while to get water charged down the lines and all the way down to float, but they got water on it and on the dock — our practically brand new floats and dock system were on fire as well,” Hunt said. “They were able to push the boat away a little bit, and then it floated off to the east to the inside of our harbor.”
First responders in Whittier had already been responding to several unrelated medical calls, Corbett said, when “everything happened all at once.”
The tunnel connecting Whittier, on Prince William Sound, to roadways linking up to other communities in Southcentral Alaska was shut down for about an hour to expedite travel for first responders, and Hunt said the harbor was shut down for three to four hours. An engineer will survey damage to the dock and float, Hunt said, but the area was operational Thursday and officials plan to reopen the side that was damaged.
Just a burned hull remained of the boat after the fire was extinguished.
Corbett said mechanical issues were suspected to have caused the explosion. An investigation involving multiple agencies will be conducted to determine an official cause, he said.

Two people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries Sunday after the boat they were on caught fire on Lake Lanier. At 12:33 p.m., Hall County 911 dispatched firefighters and medics to the fire at Lanier Islands Parkway in Buford.
“Upon arrival, the boat was fully engulfed, emitting black smoke in the no wake zone near dock M,” says Hall County Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Kimberlie Ledsinger. “The vessel was approximately 100 feet from the shore when Hall County Fire Rescue arrived.”
The injured boaters were among three onboard the vessel when it caught fire. All of them made it onto another vessel before the burning boat was engulfed in flames.

The cause of the incident is unknown at this time and will be investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office, says Ledsinger.
This is at least the fifth boat to burn on Lanier since May of last year. Fire destroyed three boats docked at Sunrise Cove Marina in south Hall County on July 11. Investigators were unable to determine the cause of that fire.

The Riviera Marina boat fire in Charlotte County on Friday has residents saying they aren’t surprised about the fire.
Karla Sanders, a regular at Riviera Bar & Grill said, “It doesn’t surprise me because the boats are so close.”
Sanders said she’s glad no one is hurt.
“That’s more important than a boat because you can replace that, but not a life,” Sanders said.
Today the U.S. Coast Guard was on scene securing discharge while removing fuel from the water.
Tammy Martin lives nearby and heard the explosion from her home.
“I heard a kaboom. But I didn’t think it was the boats here, I just didn’t, it didn’t dawn on me it was so close to home,” Martin said.
Martin said she also saw the smoke from the fire from her home.
“This fire comes as no surprise because the marina is filled with so many boats close together,” Martin said.
“The county should have been on this long time ago. A long time ago, this wouldn’t have happened,” Martin said.
Charlotte county fire said it could take weeks to determine how the fire started.

An explosion aboard a 28-foot Rinker cabin boat Friday injured several members of a Centreville family.
Queen Anne’s County Emergency Services dispatched the call at 7:20 p.m. July 22 to the area of Eastern Bay and Bennett Point, said Lt. Andrew Wilson of the Maryland Natural Resources Police.
The boat with six people on board were traveling from Kentmorr back toward Kent Narrows when someone noticed an odor of fuel, Wilson said. A few minutes later there was a loud bang and the engine was on fire, he said.
Fire Boat 2, headed by Capt. Troy Tilghman and a crew of five from Grasonville Volunteer Fire Department, was first on the scene.
“We found the boat adrift just south of Bodkin Island,” Tilghman said. There was no fire; the boat’s suppression system had put it out.
Fire Boat 2 evacuated the people aboard the boat and took them to Cove Creek Marina, where county paramedics waited and United Communities Volunteer Fire Department had set up ground command.
Of the six people on board, five sustained burn injuries in the explosion — three serious enough to be sent to the burn center, Tilghman said.
“We’re definitely lucky no one lost their life yesterday,” Tilghman said Saturday afternoon.
“They all had burns of some nature,” Wilson said.
He said a 16-year-old boy and a 49-year-old woman were flown by Maryland State Police helicopter, Trooper 6, to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore for treatment. A 51-year-old man also was transported to the burn center by ambulance.
Wilson did not have names of the victims, so no conditions were available. He did describe the injuries as “non-life-threatening.”
Fire Boat 1 from Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department took over the marine recovery effort after Fire Boat 2 evacuated the patients, Tilghman said. They towed the disabled vessel back to Kent Island Yacht Club.
In addition to NRP, and Grasonville, KI and United Communities VFDs, DES and MSP, mutual aid was provided by Tilghman Island and St. Michaels volunteer fire companies and the U.S. Coast Guard. The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office also responded, Wilson said.

On Saturday, Pass Christian Fire Department and Harrison County Fire Rescue responded to a boat fire at Pass Christian Yacht Works.
According to Pass Christian Fire Chief Dwight Gordon, a 40 foot house boat caught fire in Pass Christian around 11:50 a.m. The initial fire created an explosion near Pass Christian Yacht Works, which could be heard and felt all around the city.
According to Pass Christian fire crews, the fire was so intense that the only way to extinguish the flames was to sink the vessel.
The boat’s owner along with a child and two dogs were all reported to be on the boat at the time of the fire. Only minor injuries were reported.
Investigators say an electrical issue could be the cause of the fire.

Firefighters got an early start to the day, knocking down a boat fire in the Chickamauga Lock.
Units responded to a call close to 8:15 this morning on Trailhead Drive, and found a burning vessel.
Smoke from the fire could be seen by drivers on Highway 153.
Two people that were in the boat got out and began swimming to safety.
They were picked up by a construction boat in the area.
A fire boat eventually knocked down the flames with a deck gun, and had it pulled out of the lock and into the river to finish extinguishing the fire.
The cause of the blaze is unknown, and the two passengers were transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

 A family of five was rushed to a local hospital after a boat exploded and caught fire in the waters off Kings Point, Long Island, on Friday.
Thick, black smoke billowed from the boat fire in the water off Stepping Stone Marina just before 4:30 p.m.
"They got as far as the end of my mooring area, my channel, and the boat exploded," said Peter Zorskas, a launch operator for the Stepping Stone Marina.
Zorskas told CBS2's Thalia Perez he jumped into action to help rescue the passengers after he heard the explosion and saw the 22-foot boat go up in flames.
"Three of the occupants were thrown off, overboard, and the two jumped overboard," Great Neck Alert Fire Company Chief John Purcell said. "We got all five of the people out within two minutes of the explosion."
Two adults and two teenagers suffered scrapes and burns. Officials say a 5-year-old boy suffered broken bones.
John Yuska, an employee of Great Neck Park, says he stayed with the child until an ambulance arrived.
"He was crying, but he was, you know, OK. He had an issue with his arm, but his leg, compound fracture," he said.
Officials say the fire was under control within 30 minutes thanks to a multiagency response from the FDNY, the NYPD and the Coast Guard.
The cause of the explosion and fire is under investigation.
"At this time, from what the Coast Guard and the Arson Squad are saying, it was just a malfunction of the boat, whether it was the gas, whether it was the motor or the gas, but it came from the rear," Purcell said.
The victims were all taken to local hospitals.
Officials want to remind those going out on the water that lifejackets save lives. Everyone in this incident was wearing one, and without them, the outcome could have been much worse.

Anyone driving on I-75 this afternoon near Punta Gorda probably saw a lot of black smoke.
Just to the west of the interstate, the sky was filled with heavy black smoke.
Crews responded to the Riviera Marina off of Deltona Drive near the Riviera Bar and Grill around 1:45 p.m. on Friday.
Public Information Officer Todd Dunne says several boats were on fire when they arrived.
The boats were bunched up together near the dock.
The fire was put out around 4:30 p.m. and the Coast Guard along with others are out there for fuel clean-up and containment.
No one was hurt.
