Boat fire in Kent County under investigation - Kent County, MD

8/31/2016

The Office of the State Fire Marshal says they responded to Osprey Marina in Kent County on Wednesday in response to reports of a boat fire.

According to the report, around 10 AM, a marina employee saw flames coming from a 55' Prestige 5500 Fly 2015 boat and called it in. It reportedly took 40 firefighters from Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Department and Fire Department boats from Kent, Queen Anne's, and Baltimore counties about 90 minutes to control the blaze.

Officials say that both the area of origin and the preliminary cause are under investigation, and no arrests or injuries were reported. Damages have been listed at around $1.5 million.

If anyone has information regarding this fire, they are asked to contact the Upper Eastern Regional Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal at 410-822-7609.

Two people taken to hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning while boating near Havre de Grace Sunday afternoon - Havre de Grace, MD

8/29/2016

One of two patients being taken to shock trauma Sunday after being overcome by carbon monoxide was in an ambulance that caught fire on I-95 on the way to the hospital.

Emergency medical personnel and local firefighters were called to help two people overcome by carbon monoxide while boating near Havre de Grace Sunday around 3:34 p.m.

A man and a woman were taken in separate ambulances to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, according to Steve Allers, deputy chief with the Susquehanna Hose Company.

The couple were "enjoying a day on the water" near the Log Pond Marina, off Concord Street, when they suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning, coming from their boat's engine exhaust, Allers said.

Both were being taken to Shock Trauma by the Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps. One of the ambulances caught fire while in the Kingsville area of I-95, with a "small flame" reported under the hood, Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps President Zachary Coyle said.

Allers confirmed the ambulance was taking the carbon monoxide victims.

No one in the ambulance was injured when it caught fire, and the vehicle has been taken to a certified dealer to be evaluated before being returned to service, Coyle said.

The carbon monoxide patient was taken to the hospital by a Baltimore County fire unit, Coyle said.

"We want to thank all the responders," including Maryland State Police and Baltimore County responders, Coyle said. He also thanked his ambulance crews.

"They helped keep a stressful incident very calm," Coyle said.

One of two Newfoundland dogs on the boat was also treated after being taken by Harford County Animal Control, Allers said.

The incident was reported shortly at 3:34 p.m.

Monitored Harford County emergency radio broadcasts said two people on a boat were sick and requested ambulances and carbon monoxide monitoring equipment to report to the Tidewater Marina in the 100 block of Bourbon Street, along the Susquehanna River in downtown Havre de Grace.

Westchester police save 2 from Hudson after boat catches fire - Briarcliff, NY

8/26/2016

Two people who jumped from their burning boat into the Hudson River were rescued by county police Saturday evening.

Kieran O'Leary, a spokesman for the Westchester County police, said a boat off the shore of Briarcliff Manor caught fire around 5:22 p.m., forcing a man and a woman in their 20s to jump into the river without life vests.

About two miles upriver near Sing Sing prison in Ossining, the Westchester County Police Marine Unit was on patrol when it  saw the black smoke rising from the burning, 18-foot Baylinder Bowrider, O'Leary said.

The county police boat rushed to the scene in time for officers Isai Moreira and Willie Saez to pull the man and woman from the water and battle the blaze using the firefighting equipment aboard the police boat.

A second county police boat and the Croton Fire Department also responded to fight the fire, which started in the boat's engine, O'Leary said.

Sailboat catches fire in Ruskin marina - Ruskin, FL

8/25/2016

A sailboat caught fire Friday night at Shell Point Marina in Ruskin.

The 45-foot-long, dual-mast sailboat was in a boat slip at the marina, located at 3340 W Shell Point Road. The fire started in an electrical outlet used to power the boat while docked and located in the hull, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

Fire Rescue received a 911 call reporting the fire around 5:40 p.m. Units from a "hazardous incident team" were called in to manage extinguishing the flame because of the challenge of fighting a fire in a floating boat tied to a dock.

Crews cut a hole in the boat over the outlet to put out the fire and clear the smoke from the vessel.

The boat sustained minor damage and no environmental impact or injuries were reported.

Fire destroys boat on Gull Lake - Lake Shore, MN

8/24/2016

A boat was destroyed by fire Wednesday night in the Gull Lake Narrows in Lake Shore.

Nisswa Fire Chief Richard Geike said the runabout boat was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived to the scene. Geike said the boat owner was stopping to get gas when he noticed the fire. The man jumped off the boat and swam to shore about 100 feet away.

Geike said when firefighters arrived, they had to first try to get the boat to shore to extinguish the fire. A nearby boat assisted the fire department by driving back and forth to make waves so the burning boat would float to shore. Once the boat was near the shore, firefighters extinguished the fire.

Geike said the cause of the fire is not known.

The fire was reported shortly after 8 p.m. and firefighters cleared the scene around 9 p.m. Ten firefighters responded to the boat fire.
