Fire destroys power boat off Plymouth Beach - Plymouth, MA

Fire destroyed a boat off Plymouth Beach Thursday.
Harbormaster Chad Hunter said the 25-foot Pro-Line caught fire shortly after 2 p.m. as the owner, a beach resident, prepared to depart on a fishing trip with a friend.
Hunter said the boat’s engine had recently been repaired and caught fire as the owner was tying off his skiff. The owner realized he could not fight the fire with his extinguisher and decided to get back into the skiff and seek help.
Police and firefighters received numerous calls as thick, black smoke lifted over the harbor.
The boat was moored just off the channel, in front of the owner’s cottage.
Hunter said his crews quickly determined that nobody was on the boat and then used their pumps to knock down the flames. Firefighters responded on their boat as well and helped extinguish the fire.
The fire crews were able to put out the fire without sinking the boat. The wreckage was towed to Brewer’s Marine.

Boat Explosion on Lake Powell - Bullfrog, UT

8/22/2017

On the afternoon of Friday August 18, 2017, National Park Service Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Dispatch received a report of a boat explosion with several injured persons and possible flame and smoke still present at the Bullfrog Fuel Dock on Lake Powell in Kane County, Utah. Several National Park Service personnel responded to the incident and triaged seven patients, ranging from three to 53 years old, suffering from partial thickness burns.

The patients were transported to the Bullfrog medical clinic; five of the patients were then transported to larger medical facilities via fixed wing and rotor medical aircraft. While patient treatment was underway, the damaged vessel was towed away from the fuel dock and moored to the fuel dock breakwater where it began to list; the vessel was towed to shore by ARAMARK Executive Services and was retrieved on August 19, 2017.

Witnesses stated that refueling was completed, but the boat became untied and started drifting away from the dock. The boat operator then started the boat before proper ventilation time could be achieved. Initial investigation indicates that the cause of the explosion was inadequate ventilation of low bilge areas prior to ignition of the boat.

The Utah State Fire Marshall is leading the investigation on the cause of the boat explosion. The National Park Service is also conducting a separate investigation into the incident.

Boats explode on Lake Havasu - Lake Havasu City, AZ

Two people were injured and two boats destroyed in a pair of vessel explosions over the weekend on Lake Havasu.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate a boat engine fire that left two people injured at Windsor Beach State Park on Saturday afternoon.

Waterways deputies arrived at the no-wake zone in the south area of the beach and found four people in a 21-foot 1989 Cole boat. Personnel from the Lake Havasu Fire Department had already reached the location.

Dale Leon Nichols, 78, of Avondale, was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center with second-degree burns and was transferred to an unspecified burn center in Phoenix for further treatment.

The operator of the boat, Dean Nichols, 56, of Lancaster, Calif., was treated at the scene. The other two passengers were uninjured.

It has so far been determined that a fire started as a result of gasoline fumes building up when the boat engine backfired. Nichols extinguished the engine compartment fire with two onboard fire extinguishers, according to deputies.

Another boat exploded on Sunday, the sheriff’s office reported. There were no injuries in the blast near Havasu Palms.

Approximately 4:55 p.m., deputies responded to a boat explosion where both of the occupants jumped into the water after the explosion. A man and woman, both of Havasu Palms, were boating in the area when they heard a hissing sound coming from the engine compartment. They investigated by lifting cover to the engine compartment and the engine ignited.

Firefighters investigate boat fire, explosion overnight at Hammond Marina - Hammond, IN

State conservation officers are investigating after responding to a fire and explosion during the overnight hours Tuesday at Hammond Marina.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded at about 3:50 a.m. to the marina for a report of a fire, said Lt. Terri Millefoglie, spokeswoman for Indiana Department of Natural Resources' law enforcement division.

A preliminary investigation showed one docked boat caught fire before the blaze spread to another in the G dock section of the marina, near the main office, Millefoglie said.

Two boats are considered total losses, she said, and two others suffered some level of damage. Investigators believe an explosion on the first boat triggered the second boat to catch fire.

The police and fire departments of Hammond, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, Hammond Port Authority, Hammond Marina, and Tow Boat U.S., all assisted at the scene, Millefoglie said.
At this time, there have been no injuries reported.  Hammond fire officials are investigating the fire.
The cause remains under investigation.
