Smoke From Boat Fire Billows Over Shelter Island - San Diego, CA

9/30/2016

Smoke billowed over Shelter Island early Friday morning when a fire ripped through a docked boat.
The fire was reported at around 5:30 a.m. on a 30-foot vessel docked near the 2200 block of Shelter Island Drive.

Thirty firefighers with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) rushed to the scene to find the boat fully engulfed in flames. Smoke was visible from a distance, lingering over the water.

The biggest challenge for crews was gaining quick access to the boat. Officials said they had to lay fire hoses for 700 to 800 feet on the pier leading to the vessel.

Within a half-hour, the boat fire had been knocked down.

SDFD officials said one woman aboard the boat safely escaped the fire, running onto a pier. The woman suffered minor burns but officials said she was treated at the scene and did not want to be taken to the hospital.

Officials believe the fire started in the boat's engine. An investigation will determine more details.
The Harbor Police Department told NBC 7 crews will now work to remove water from the boat so it doesn't sink. The vessel will then be taken to a salvage yard.

A good Samaritan was credited with rescuing eight people from a burning boat near Sandy Hook, New Jersey late Sunday afternoon.

Around 5 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook got a distress call over VHF Channel 16 from a 40-foot recreational boat, saying the boat was on fire, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard rescue crew went out on a 47-Motor Lifeboat and found the burning boat along with the FDNY. The good Samaritan had already transferred the eight people off the boat, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard assisted the FDNY in putting out the fire on the boat. The fire was extinguished, but the boat was destroyed by the fire and sank in about 85 feet of water about six miles offshore, the Coast Guard said.

Fire Consumes Naples Island Vessel - Long Beach, CA

9/20/2016

A fire consumed a 25-foot vessel at a Naples Island dock Monday night.

Jonathan and Peter Schnack’s “Five Buoys” erupted in flames around 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 19, Jonathan said on a Facebook post. He said he’d received a call about the blaze and the two were at their Colonnade home when it started. No one was onboard or injured, he said, and the fire didn’t spread anywhere.

“By the time fire crews arrived, it was already fully engulfed in flames,” Schnack said. “Heartbreakingly, the boat is a total loss, and we don’t have any answers yet as to how it happened… We have our lives and all of our wonderful memories, and a lifetime ahead of us to build more. A huge thank you to the Long Beach Fire Department and to all our neighbors who were there for us… If you know us, you know how special that boat was to our family. It’s just heartbreaking.”

Schnack said people have reached out with kind words and cupcakes. The boat had more than 100 guests from all over the world in the last 4.5 years, he said. The vessel took the couple and others to Catalina more than 20 times, and other places; hosted celebrations; participated in fundraisers.

“From Adventure Guides trips to ones where we just followed the boys in regattas, she’s been the heart of our life on the water,” Schnack said in another post. “I have a billion favorite pictures from Five Buoys.”

Fire destroys lobster boat off Jonesport - Jonesport, ME

9/9/2016

A fire Thursday morning destroyed a lobster boat tied to a mooring ball off Hopkins Point, according to the Coast Guard.

The blaze was reported at 6:12 a.m. by the boat’s owner, who was on shore when he called to report it, the Coast Guard indicated in a prepared statement. Photos taken by Coast Guard personnel show that the boat, the 32-foot Bigger Dirls, burned nearly all the way down to the water’s surface.

The Coast Guard launched a 29-foot response boat with crew and used a dewatering pump to help put out the flames. Jonesport Fire Department assisted in dousing the fire, the Coast Guard indicated.

After the blaze was extinguished, another fisherman towed the smoking hull to shore at nearby Hopkins Point Marina, according to the statement. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Attempts to contact local fire officials on Thursday were unsuccessful. The town’s harbormaster, Russell Batson, said the owner just had a new engine put in on the boat and that the fire is not believed to be suspicious.

Emergency responders from the Waterford Regional Fire Department and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit were sent at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, to the Cass Lake Dry Dock Marina at 4175 Chenlot Drive to tend to victims of a watercraft accident.

Arriving officials learned that multiple people were burned when a 56-year-old Waterford man’s boat exploded after being refueled at the marina.

A 15-year-old girl from West Bloomfield Township who received second-degree burns was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital for medical treatment.

A 14-year-old Waterford girl was burned worse and taken to the Children’s Hospital Burn Unit in Detroit for treatment for third-degree burns. A 13-year-old Waterford girl who got first-degree burns was treated at the scene by paramedics, officials said.

Further investigation revealed the explosion may have occurred due to gas vapors in the engine compartment, according to authorities.

The incident is still under investigation by marine unit personnel.

Oceanside fishing boat catches fire - Oceanside, CA

9/1/2016

OCEANSIDE — Flames shooting from a 50-foot fishing boat threatened adjacent boats at Oceanside Harbor early Thursday, but the fire was controlled before it damaged other vessels.

An electrical malfunction in the navigation controls may have sparked the blaze that caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, Oceanside fire Battalion Chief Greg deAvila said.

Several people called 911 shortly after midnight to report the fire at T-Dock south of the boat launch area. Firefighters hauled hose lines down the dock and a Harbor Police rescue boat assisted, deAvila said.

The crews protected adjacent boats while other crews doused the flames in eight minutes, deAvila said. Firefighters then searched the charred and smoky fishing vessel but found no one onboard.

DeAvila said the fire appeared centered near the aft navigation controls, leading the fire investigator to believe it could have been caused by an electrical problem.

Flames did not reach the engine room or fuel tanks so environmental damage was limited, the battalion chief said. He said harbor police helped move the boat to an area where it would be easier to continue the investigation.

The name of the boat and its owner were not immediately released because the owner had not been contacted.
