69-Year-Old Woman Found Dead in Boat Fire at Port of L.A. - Los Angeles, CA

A 69-year-old woman was found dead on a boat that burned while docked at the Port of Los Angeles early Monday, officials said.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to berth 258 at Terminal Island, near San Pedro, around 4 a.m. after a firefighter at the station across the marina spotted the blaze.  Crews arrived at the scene to find a 28-foot cabin cruiser engulfed in flames, the agency said.
Firefighters put out the fire in about 15 minutes, after which one body was found in the living quarters of the vessel, Fire Department spokesman Cody Weireter told reporters. Investigators believe that person, a 69-year-old woman, resided on the boat, Weireter said.
The Fire Department reported no other injuries and released no further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The flames did not spread to the other boats docked nearby, officials said.
"It’s probably going to be a while before we can piece everything together," Port of L.A. spokesman Arley Baker said.

4 people hospitalized after boat explodes at Fort Lauderdale marina - Fort Lauderdale, FL

First responders rushed to a Fort Lauderdale marina after a boat exploded Sunday afternoon.
A 28-foot boat exploded with six occupants on board at the Lauderdale Marina.
William Garland, a retired firefighter, was nearby and immediately helped to render aid.
"It blew the back of the boat to pieces," Garland said.
The boat was backing into a fuel dock at the time of the explosion.
One adult was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Three others, including a second adult and a minor, were also hospitalized with minor injuries.
"It was a flash explosion," Garland said. "The flames were hot instantaneously and then they went out. It could have been much worse if this thing would have caught fire."
Garland said a 30-year-old woman suffered a fracture to her left leg.
"Her son was about 5 years old and he had just singe burns on him," Garland said. "Because the explosion blew the fire out, thank God for that. So all we did was tend to the injuries."
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

2 men rescued after boat catches fire off Newport Beach coast - Newport Beach, CA

Two men were rescued after their boat caught fire off the coast of Newport Beach Friday morning.

The men were returning from a diving trip at Catalina Island when they smelled smoke. They floated in a dinghy until good Samaritans came to their rescue.

"A little smoke started coming so we turned off the engines," said Nick Anderson, co-owner of the boat.

The men tried putting out the fire with a hose and fire extinguisher before deciding to abandon the ship. A group on a nearby boat let them aboard until help arrived.

"Luckily we had a dinghy and nice people around us," Anderson said.

"First time it has ever happened to me but it does happen quick...two to three minutes from smell to flame then you gotta make a decision quickly...grab as much as you can. We just grabbed our cell phones and our wallets," Anderson said.

Neither passenger was injured.

A tow company was brought in to keep what was left of the boat from sinking. An employee with the tow company said he tried to jumped on board the boat once the fire was out to keep it from sinking in order to prevent environmental pollution.

Anderson was in good spirits and said he was sad to see his boat could no longer live up to its name, "Uno Mas" which means "one more."

"Now it's 'No Mas,'" said Anderson

Owner tries to put out massive boat fire while onboard in Port Charlotte - Port Charlotte, FL

Massive flames engulfed a docked boat after a fire ignited while the owner was still onboard on Friday afternoon in Port Charlotte.
The boat fire happened around 4 p.m. on Ewing Circle.
“I would say within 10 minutes it was gone,” the boat’s owner, Robert Ryder said.
Ryder purchased the 25-foot boat in August from an estate sale. Since the purchase, Ryder said he’d travel from his home in Sebring to Port Charlotte to work on the boat.
“The plan was to bring it home Sunday, and insure it Monday with State Farm,” he said.
The plan backfired, however, during Friday’s visit while Ryder was cleaning the boat’s waterline.
“I heard a pop, turned around, there was a fire in the engine bay,” he said.
Ryder said he immediately rushed for his fire extinguisher and even used a hose to try to put out the flames.
“It’s running through your head while you’re trying to spray it out that at some point in time you have to call it quits because you know there’s a gas tank on it,” Ryder said.
A neighbor across the dock also tried helping before first responders arrived. He told Ryder to get off the boat before the fire grew more substantial.
Crews with Charlotte County Fire and EMS used 800 gallons of water to douse the flames.
While the boat is considered a total loss, no one was injured.
Ryder said the loss was difficult, but he still has dreams of setting on sail on his own boat again someday. In the meantime, he’s working to find a way to tow or haul the boat from the dock.
