Explosion: St. Helens vessel explosion injures person, kills cat - St. Helens, OR

10/29/2020

A boat exploded at the St. Helens Marina on Sunday night, injuring one person and killing a cat, according to a press release from Columbia River Fire and Rescue.
Crews were dispatched after receiving a call at 11:23 p.m. by a neighbor reporting an explosion. First responders found a patient with serious injuries and transported them to the hospital, then found the exploded vessel, according to the release.
A propane heater aboard the vessel is suspected to be the cause of the explosion. The individual lived on the boat with a cat. The cat suffered life threatening injuries and did not survive.
Columbia River Fire and Rescue crews remained on scene for several hours mopping up and containing leaking diesel with the assistance of Cowlitz Clean Sweep.
Propane heaters or appliances should not be used within a home, Columbia River Fire and Rescue said. The heaters produce odorless carbon monoxide which displaces oxygen within confined spaces and can lead to death. Space heaters should also only be used in open spaces, away from combustibles and always plugged directly into an outlet to reduce the chance of fire.

Two injured when boat burns on Yale Lake - Cowlitz County, WA

Two people were injured Saturday when their boat caught fire on Yale Lake, according to the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies from Cowlitz County and Clark County were dispatched to the lake to help Fire District 7 respond to a report of an occupied boat on fire in the lake, according to a sheriff’s office statement.
The operator of the boat, a 60-year-old Portland man, suffered second-degree burns on his legs and a passenger, a 20-year-old Milwaukie, Ore., woman was also burned. They were both transported to the burn center at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, according to the sheriff’s office.
A third passenger escaped with minor injuries, and a small dog on the boat managed to escape the fire and was recovered, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies suspect a fouled backfire flame arrestor may have been the cause of the fire, which burned the boat to its hull, the sheriff’s office said.

Fire Rapidly Spreads To Other Boats, Dock, Tiki Bar At Stamford Harbor - Stamford, CT

10/4/2020

A fire that broke out on a boat docked in Stamford Harbor quickly spread to other boats, a dock, and tiki bar.
The blaze began just after 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Hinckley boatyard on Selleck Street, the Stamford Fire Department said.
When the first engine arrived, the boat fire was fully involved close to the dock. The engine began to deploy hose lines, but the boat was adrift and was pushed to the east side of the canal by the prevailing wind, the fire department reported.
The original boat on fire came to rest at a section of the dock behind the Beacon apartments on Harbor Point Road.
The fire immediately extended to the dock, three additional boats, and a floating tiki bar, according to the fire department.
A water- and land-based firefighting effort was mounted from shore on Pacific Street, using three hose lines, and by fireboats in the canal.
The original boat on fire and a second on fire continued to drift south in the canal and were corralled approximated 200 feet south of the main body of fire, the department stated.
The original boat’s fuel tank ruptured and caused a floating fuel fire at the southern section of the dock at Harbor Point, according to the department.
This second fire severely exposed the northernmost dock and additional boats moored at the Ponus Yacht Club.
A second separate water- and land-based firefighting effort was mounted by additional department units on Pacific Street, using two new hose lines, and by fireboats in the canal.
The southern fire was quickly controlled and firefighting foam was used for the final extinguishment of all boats involved and the leaking fuel hazard, the department reported.
The fire was placed under control at 4:52 p.m., the department said.
The Stamford Fire Department responded with five engines, two truck companies, one rescue company, the deputy chief, and a safety officer for a total of 35 personnel.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
