The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a fire vessel Thursday in Key Largo.
The Coast Guard received a call at 6:00 a.m. about a 50 ft. boat on fire in Tarpon Basin. The Coast Guard launched a 24-foot special purpose boat to put out the houseboat fire. They were able to put out the fire using the wash from their propellers. According to the Coast Guard, there were no people aboard and no reported injuries. "We also monitored the fire due to the close proximity to the mangroves and its potential for impacting the environment," said Petty Officer 1st Class John Fleming in a press release. Fire officials on Long Island are investigating a blaze that destroyed a boat over the weekend.
Newsday reports firefighters responded to the fire behind the Freeport home around 5:25 p.m. Saturday. The fire was contained within half an hour. The 32-foot (9.75-meter) boat was destroyed in the blaze. No injuries were reported. Freeport Fire Department executive director Ray Maguire says it appears the fire started on top of the flying bridge. The boat belonged to the homeowner. The county fire marshal's office is investigating. Four crew members from the commercial fishing vessel Ocean Gale were rescued by the crew of the commercial fishing vessel Smith Brothers No. 2, after a boat fire 13 miles southwest of Pillar Point Harbor Monday evening, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Fishermen aboard the Ocean Gale, a 37-foot vessel, reported the fire to the Coast Guard at approximately 5 p.m. Monday. The Coast Guard helicopter crew arrived on scene and discovered the Ocean Gale engulfed in flames. The four crewmembers abandoned ship in a life raft and were retrieved by the crew of Smith Brothers No. 2. The four rescued people were taken to Half Moon Bay, according to the Coast Guard. The cause of the fire is under investigation and there were no reports of injuries. A Sarasota family was rescued by a ferry Monday after their boat caught fire in the Gulf of Mexico.
A video posted on Facebook and captured by a passenger on the Key West Express ferry shows a family of three jumping from their 40-foot-boat that showed smoke billowing behind it as it began to sink. The ferry, which travels from Fort Myers to the Keys and back, was closer to the boaters than the U.S. Coast Guard and helped rescue them, according to a NewsChannel 8 report. Three boaters were rescued after their vessel caught fire off the coast of Key West, Monday morning.
The three people on board abandoned ship and jumped into the water. The Key West Ferry was in the middle of its route between Fort Myers and Key West when the distressed boaters were spotted. All three were pulled out of the water and onto the ferry. They were given towels to dry off as they met with the captain. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown. A nearly 38-foot charter boat is being described as a “total loss” following a fire Sunday night, November 12.
“At about 9 PM, we received calls for a large boat on fire, possibly multiple boats. It turned out to be a 38- to 40-foot commercial boat fully involved in fire when we arrived,” Deputy Fire Chief Timothy R. Smith said. The boat, named My Brother, is owned by Harvey Russell. Mr. Russell runs fishing charters out of Oak Bluffs in the summer. The boat was docked in Falmouth Harbor for the winter. “It’s very unfortunate. He had a very good charter business, taking people fishing. He will probably have to get a new boat for his business,” said James H. Tietje, manager of Woods Hole Boat Sales Inc. “He is a good person; you hate to see something like this happen to him.” My Brother had been out on the water cod fishing earlier in the day. It docked near the Clam Shack of Falmouth, off the corner of Clinton and Scranton avenues, approximately 5 PM. It caught fire later that evening. Firefighters had the fire under control by 9:30 PM, but remained on the scene for a couple of hours. “Boat fires are a little stubborn to put out, because of the materials, particularly the fiberglass,” Mr. Smith said. “We also have to be careful putting water into the boat, as too much will cause it to sink.” The department was concerned about the potential for a diesel fuel leak. In addition to pumping the boat, they deployed oil booms around the marina as a precaution. “We were able to keep the boat from sinking and didn’t have any diesel fuel leak,” Mr. Smith said. He described the boat as a “total loss” following the fire. It was not the only boat damaged in the blaze. Mr. Tietje said a boat named No Claims ,owned by David Lawrence, was significantly damaged, with the heat causing its radar dome and window gaskets to melt. “One boat was totaled, the other badly damaged. If there was more wind, it could have been so much worse,” Mr. Tietje said. In addition to the boats, the dock caught on fire. Mr. Tietje described the dock damage as minor charring. He plans on repairing the dock, which might involve replacing some sheathing and wiring. Also responding at the scene were the Coast Guard, the Falmouth Harbormaster and TowBoatUS. Once extinguished, both boats were towed to MacDougalls’ Cape Cod Marine Service. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a pair of boaters late Wednesday after a fire broke out aboard their vessel in the Indian River just offshore from Titusville.
The two passengers were asleep aboard a 48-foot catamaran at about 10 p.m. when they were awakened to the smell of smoke wafting through the boat. They immediately called channel 16, the international distress radio frequency. "They hailed the Coast Guard and said their boat was on fire," Coast Guard petty officer 3rd class Ryan Dickinson said. The two decided to abandon the ship and escaped the fiery vessel by jumping into a dingy, Dickinson said. The Coast Guard crew arrived in a response boat and recovered the pair, and transported them to Marina Park in Titusville, where they were examined by paramedics and taken to Parrish Medical Center. Both were in stable condition. An investigation is ongoing. The Coast Guard is searching for possible missing people after a boat caught fire and sank Monday afternoon about 3 miles south of the San Bernard River, near Freeport.
Around 2:45 p.m., flames and smoke were reported just south of the San Bernard River. Coast Guard helicopter found a 25-foot-long vessel burned beyond identification. The vessel sank shortly after crews arrived. “Our No. 1 priority is the preservation of human life,” said Lt. Mike Hart, chief duty officer at Sector Houston-Galveston. “We have several assets actively searching for any possible missing persons.” Coast Guard crews said they would continue searching throughout the night. |
