A man sifted through the burned wreckage of a boat Sunday night at Pier One Marina off Route 37.
State Police said three boats were severely burned there, where firefighting foam coated the lagoon’s water.
"There was an occupant of a houseboat, (who) called 911 because they saw and smelled smoke," said State Trooper Alejandro Goez. "The vessel became engulfed and then the vessel ignited two other houseboats that were docked nearby.”
Two other personal watercrafts were also also damaged, he said.
The fire was reported before 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Goez said. The Toms River Fire Department extinguished the blaze and no injuries were reported, he said.
One of the vessels, blackened with soot and melted, still smoldered as of 7:30 p.m.
The boat’s owner declined to comment.
Toms River authorities determined the fire was "non-suspicious," Goez said.

A fire erupted on a boat out on the Elk River early Sunday morning, causing five people to jump overboard and swim for safety.
All five passengers swam roughly 15 yards to the shore around 7:45 a.m. after a fire sparked in the engine compartment on the 32-foot 1989 Albemarle Convertible cabin boat, according to the Natural Resources Police.
No one was injured. Once all five passengers arrived on shore, they declined medical treatment.
“What we know right now is that they saw the meters shoot up,” said Lt. Catherine Medellin, a NRP spokeswoman, on Sunday afternoon. “We’re still gathering information.”
According to NRP's preliminary investigation, the boat reportedly came from the C&D Canal and was on its way to the Chester River. The fire started once the boat neared the Harbour North Marina.
Roughly 20 firefighters from the Charlestown, Hack's Point, and North East fire departments responded to the blaze, taking about an hour to fully extinguish it, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal.
The boat, owned by Robert James, sustained $30,000 in damage, according to the fire marshal's office. The area of the fire's origin as well as the cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials reported Sunday night.

Hendersonville firefighters are investigating the cause of a boat fire at Drakes Creek Marina late Thursday.
The fire started on one of the boats before midnight.
According to Division Chief Gabe Hannah, there was a man and his dog on the boat when the fire started. The man was able to get them both off of the boat and called 911 for help.
Thankfully, Chief Hannah said the fire happened on the same dock at which the Fire Department docks its boat. It didn't take long to get the fire boat to help put out the flames, Hannah said.
In all, three boats were affected by the fire. One was destroyed, and two others were damaged by the flames or heat.
According to the Fire Department, part of Dock A will be shut down to the public for repairs.
The cause is still not clear.
"It's going to take us a little bit to see," said Hendersonville Fire Chief Scotty Bush. "We're in the middle of it and we'll go from there. Of course, where the actual fire started and this is what you get to do your investigation on. It's submerged in water and foam and so much other stuff on it. It will take it a little while to get it out and sift through it."
