Liveaboard boat catches fire in LaBelle - Fort Meyers, FL

11/23/2020

A boat caught fire behind a LaBelle motel on Sunday morning.
The boat, which was serving as a man’s home, caught fire around 8:30 a.m behind the Rivers Edge Motel in LaBelle.
Wallace Wright, who was visiting the motel, said he saw the plumes of smoke from his window.
“I was just worried the guy who lived on the boat was on there,” said Wright.
Wallace said before first responders could arrive, a man living on a boat just feet from the burning vessel ran over to extinguish the flames.
Joseph Smith said he ran over with his fire extinguisher, pulled the cover off the engine and tried his best to put the fire out.
“Grabbed the fire extinguisher and ran over here and I pulled the covers off the engine because that’s usually where the problem is, an electrical fire,” said Smith.
He said the boat was locked, making it impossible to put out the fire.
The LaBelle Fire Department responded shortly after, getting into the boat and extinguishing the flames.
“Guess he lost everything he had on the boat but it’s better than losing your life on the boat,” said Wright.
Fortunately, the man living on the boat was on a Thanksgiving trip to Georgia. Nobody was injured in the fire.
The State Fire Marshall will investigate the cause of the fire.

Large boat catches fire in Stamford - Stamford, CT

Firefighters battled a boat fire at Dolphin Cove on Saturday afternoon.
While preliminary reports indicated a 31-foot boat was fully-involved when they arrived, fire officials said in a release Saturday that it was a 38-foot boat “well-involved in fire.”
The fire in the cabin cruiser broke out shortly after noon. Over 20 fire officials headed to the site of the fire, according to the release, and there weren’t any injuries reported.
“Firefighters arrived on scene in less than four minutes and found a 38-foot cabin cruiser that was well-involved in fire and located at a dock behind 109 Dolphin Cove Quay,” a release from Stamford Fire read. “Fire personnel were able to quickly extinguish and contain the fire and prevent any environmental damage to the harbor.”
At 12:42 p.m., the bulk of the fire had been extinguished. Firefighters on shore and on a boat brought the fire under control.
The boat was secured to prevent it from drifting. Firefighters reported no fuel or oil was seen in the water. The Coast Guard had contacted the fire department for details, officials said.
Dolphin Cove was developed in 1972. The land had been part of the 121-acre estate of C. Russell Feldmann, an industrial mogul involved in the manufacturing of radios and cars.
Beginning on a street named Dolphin Cove Quay, a swath of closely clustered colonial homes forms its own enclave. Each of the private roads have nautical-inspired names such as Joshua Slocum Dock, named after the first man to sail around the world.
The city fire marshal’s office is looking into what caused the blaze.

The Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of a large boat fire Friday morning at Kings Point Marina in Lake Norman.
No one was injured, but several boats at the marina sustained major damage.
Cornelius-Lemley and Huntersville firefighters responded to the fire just after 3 a.m. Friday.
"You have a marine fire," a dispatcher can be heard telling firefighters on a recording of radio communication. "Caller is advising multiple boats on fire at a dock."
Firefighters cut nearby boats loose and quickly doused the flames with water, an act the Cornelius-Lemley Fire Department credited with preventing the fire from spreading to the marina and other boats.
The department said its firefighters train often for marina emergencies.
Neighbors with views of the the marina said the bright flames and emergency vehicle sirens woke them from their sleep.
WCNC Charlotte spoke briefly to the marina's general manager and the owner of one of the damaged boats, but both people declined to be interviewed due to the pending investigation.

Vessel on fire goes adrift from St. George to South Thomaston - South Thomaston, ME

Firefighters were able to intercept a burning boat after it drifted from St. George to South Thomaston, Monday morning, Nov. 16.
With the Coast Guard and Marine Patrol still en route, members of St. George and South Thomaston’s fire departments grabbed portable pumps and hoses and leaped aboard a rescue boat as they raced to get to the flames before those flames came into contact with land or other structures.
Around 7 a.m., Monday, Nov. 16, as power lines were being restored throughout the area from an overnight wind storm, a couple of men in St. George headed to their boat at 257 Island Ave, on Rackliff Island. According to St. George Fire Chief Michael Smith, the boat appeared beat up, having been tossed against the dock during the storm.
The men went to start it up in order to pump it out. In turning it on, the engine caught fire. The men may have attacked the flames once with a fire extinguisher and then called for backup, according to Smith.
Before crews arrived, the fire burned away the boat’s connection to its dockage. Still aflame, the boat went adrift across the bay, prompting a mutual aid response by South Thomaston.
As the Tradition chased the vessel, other firefighters maintained watch from multiple locations along the shoreline. One fire truck remained on the island, another crew waited on the causeway, “just strategically sticking around just in case it ended up somewhere,” said Smith. Others staged, along with South Thomaston EMS, at Atwood Lobster, in South Thomaston.
All the while, the boat was still in flames.
“I’m surprised it’s still floating,” said Smith after the boat was extinguished and towed to Atwood’s.
Shortly after 8 a.m., the vessel was tied securely, and turned over to the responsibility of the arriving Marine Patrol unit.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of mariner on a boat that caught fire in Richardson Bay.
The fire happened early Saturday morning. Neighbors reported a small explosion, and the Coast Guard responded.
The county coroner’s office is still working to identify the occupant of the boat because of the severity of the burns.
Jeff Jacob, who lives on Richardson Bay, described the resident of the boat as an experienced mariner. He said there were generators aboard the boat.
“He was a seaworthy sailor,” Jacob said. “He knew what he was doing out there. It could have happened to any boat.”

A pleasure boat was destroyed by fire in the morning as crews from two towns responded. The fire was reported shortly after 7 a.m. Nov. 16.
According to St. George Fire Chief Michael Smith, the 22-foot pleasure boat was tied up to a dock on Rackliff Island. The boat took a beating from the wind storm the night of Nov. 15, the chief said.
A father and son who own the boat went to pump it out and start the engine when a fire ignited. The line burned and the vessel drifted toward Spruce Head Island.
St. George responded to the dock and put out a small fire.
There were no injuries.
Firefighters from the two towns then used Douglas McLellan's lobster boat with him operating it to reach the burning vessel. There were five firefighters from the South Thomaston Fire Department and one from the St. George Fire Department with equipment including a portable pump and hoses.
The crews used ocean water to extinguish the flames.
At one point, the burning boat was close to the shore and the fire crew hooked onto the boat and pulled it away, while still extinguishing the fire. Once the fire was out, the boat was towed to Atwood's wharf on Spruce Head Island for the U.S. Coast Guard to investigate.
The Marine Marine Patrol also responded.

Good Samaritan pulls 6 from burning boat in Huntington Harbour - Los Angeles, CA

A good Samaritan pulled six people out of a burning boat in Huntington Harbour Sunday, officials said.
Firefighters were called to the boat fire near Peter’s Landing around 12:45 p.m., the Huntington Beach Fire Department said in a news release.
Six people were on the boat when it started burning. Witnesses described hearing a blast before the fire erupted, according to the Orange County Register.
Someone nearby got onto his dinghy and managed to pull up near the bow of the boat and pull the victims to safety, officials said. He then took them to a dock near Warner Fire Station.
Paramedics arrived and treated the six people, including four who ended up at local hospitals. Another injured person signed out against medical advice and the sixth refused care, fire officials said.
Five people — two men, a woman, a boy and a girl — were injured, Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Joe Cope told the Register. The sixth person on the boat, an adult, was not injured.
It remains unclear what caused the fire.
The boat was towed to nearby Sunset Aquatic Park, where fire investigators will be probing the vessel, officials said.
After the incident, the Fire Department urged recreational boaters to make sure children younger than 13 years wear an approved life jacket while on any moving vessel.
