One man with burns was airlifted Monday night to a hospital in Galveston after a boat caught fire in the Seadrift City Harbor.
His age and name were not available Tuesday morning, though he is about 30 years old and from the Galveston area, said Sgt. Mike Henry of the Seadrift Police Department.
The man was working on the engine of a 20-foot oystering vessel named “Shark” when the fire started.
Henry said the boat was fully engulfed in flames when he arrived on the scene about 9:20 p.m. The man’s hands were severely burned, and he had burns on his face and nose, Henry said.
“He was by himself at the time working on his boat, and somehow it ignited; I don’t know whether through a spark or heat, but it caught fire,” he said. “He jumped into the water, and other local oystermen helped him out.”
The boat sat afloat in the harbor Tuesday morning, burned black with a gaping hole on the right side and a mangled engine.
No nearby boats appeared to be damaged.
Henry said the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Seadrift Volunteer Fire Department, Calhoun County EMS and Texas General Land Office responded to the harbor to assist Seadrift police.
The U.S. Coast Guard is conducting its own investigation, though whether the incident is being investigated as an explosion or fire was not immediately clear, said an official with U.S. Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi.
No pollution was reported as a result of the incident, according to the Coast Guard’s initial report.
In November 2018, two men were hospitalized after a 28-foot aluminum oystering vessel exploded in the same harbor.
The boat exploded as they were getting ready to leave the harbor the day after oyster season opened, the Advocate reported.

Pollution control teams responded to a marina in southern New Jersey after two large boats caught fire.
The fire at the Seaview Harbor Marina in Egg Harbor Township broke out around 1 a.m. Monday and took several hours to bring under control. The marina is located near the causeway that connects to Longport and at the mouth a back bay and an inlet connecting to the ocean.
The vessels are about 50 to 60 feet long and each was carrying about 1,000 gallons of fuel, the Coast Guard told WPVI-TV. The boats were partially submerged at their docks.
A National Guard truck was brought in to spray foam to contain the fire and to try to keep the fuel from spreading across the water. Marina officials hired a firm to conduct an environmental cleanup, which the U.S. Coast Guard is supervising.
The Coast Guard said a salvage plan was underway, adding that the marina and boat owners are responsible for all cleanup and mitigation.
There were no reports of injuries, and officials say no wildlife was impacted.
Officials were trying to determine what caused the fires.

Two people and their dog are safe after Biloxi firefighters rescued them from their burning house boat early Friday morning.
The boat was docked at Point Cadet Marina near the Golden Nugget Casino when it caught fire at 3:15 a.m. The couple and their dog were trapped on the boat until firefighters, with the help of the harbor master, arrived.
Fortunately, they were able to be rescued without suffering any injuries. However, officials say the boat is a total loss. It’s still unclear how the fire started.
Biloxi Fire Department utilized the agency’s 33-foot fire boat to put out the flames and rescue the couple and their dog. The fire boat, named the Serena G., is a multipurpose vessel that is able to supply water to help fight flames. It also has a climate-controlled cabin and two state-of-the-art water nozzles, including one nozzle that can be operated remotely.
