“Our engines were able to put the fire out,” said Waretown Fire Chief Brent Cunningham. “Fortunately, there were no injuries associated with the scene.”
Other information provided by the Waretown Fire Department indicates that upon arrival to the marina, firefighters observed that one of the boats burned through its ropes attaching it to the dock, Wind caused it to begin drifting into the middle of the lagoon.
The first responders secured the vessels with their own equipment as this is a common problem when high heat comes into contact with boat ropes. As crews were stretching hose lines, the NJ State Police Marine unit was able to assist in re-securing the vessel.
A social media poster shared that she and her husband own one of the boats destroyed in the fire. Her husband attempted to put the fire out on his own and left for safety when two fire extinguishers were ineffective.
“The Ocean County Fire Marshall and the State Marine Police are now in charge of the scene,” shared Cunningham.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and is subject to investigation.
