On June 29, deputies said they were called around 3:45 p.m. to the area of Cayuga Lake State Park for a boat fire with a possible explosion.
A marine patrol boat that arrived on scene found the fire was out and the 19-foot boat had been towed to shore.
The boat driver told deputies that a gas line began to leak onto the hot engine, which caused the fire. Using the fire extinguisher onboard, the driver was able to put out the fire, then have the boat towed to shore. The boat had damage to the engine and stern.
The Seneca County Marine Patrol issued the boat driver a ticket for not having any flotation devices onboard the boat.
Seneca County Sheriff Tim Luce said all boaters should inspect their boat before going out on the water, have a plan and tell someone where you are going, and to make sure your safety equipment is on board and up to date.
