The Patten Avenue Bridge over the Manhasset Creek was closed Wednesday afternoon due to a boat fire on the water below.
Fire crews battled the blaze on a 30-foot vessel that is engulfed in flames off Patten Avenue, the Long Branch Fire Department wrote in a Facebook post.
Long Branch Police Chief Jason Roebuck said later in the evening that the vessel had caught fire at the Patten Point Yacht Club, broke away from its mooring and floated – while ablaze – under the bridge into Monmouth Beach waters.
At that time, the vessel came to rest up against a private dock and the blaze was extinguished, Roebuck said.
The Patten Avenue Bridge connects Long Branch and Monmouth Beach over the Manhassett Creek. Monmouth Beach police had urged motorists to avoid the area.
