A 56-foot boat tied to a dock at Jordan Marine Services — on Sarah Creek off the York River — went up in flames around 10 p.m.. and Coast Guard crews were called to the scene.
Coast Guard spokesman Nate Littlejohn told 10 On Your Side Tuesday that an occupant of the boat was found dead. The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office is working to notify this person’s next of kin.
The sheriff’s office says callers reported hearing an explosion and, shortly after that, seeing a docked boat fully engulfed in flames. A WAVY viewer captured a short video Monday night showing the blaze.
Crews from Abington Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, along with the sheriff’s office and Virginia Marine Resource Commission.
The sheriff’s office says it was confirmed moments into a search of the scene that a male had died in the fire. An exact cause of death has not been determined.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
However, the sheriff’s office noted Tuesday that a high level of combustible materials found in the vessel may have been responsible.
Littlejohn says the boat’s fuel tanks were almost empty, and that the pollution risk is low.
