At noon, Kelly Stubbs, 56, of St. Louis was driving a 1998 Caravelle deck boat, which was being launched and idling, when a fire started in the engine compartment and then spread. Stubbs and a juvenile passenger, Riley Stubbs of De Soto, abandoned the boat and they swam to shore. The boat drifted south, burned and sank, the report said.
The patrol did not report the juvenile's age.
No injuries were reported for Stubbs. However, Riley was moderately injured by the fire and taken by ambulance to Baxter County Memorial Hospital in Arkansas, according to the report.
Both Stubbs and Riley were exempt from wearing life jackets, the patrol reported.
Only those younger than 7 have to wear a life jacket, Cpl. Juston Wheetley said.
The Caravelle was totaled, the report said.
