Jonathan and Peter Schnack’s “Five Buoys” erupted in flames around 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 19, Jonathan said on a Facebook post. He said he’d received a call about the blaze and the two were at their Colonnade home when it started. No one was onboard or injured, he said, and the fire didn’t spread anywhere.
“By the time fire crews arrived, it was already fully engulfed in flames,” Schnack said. “Heartbreakingly, the boat is a total loss, and we don’t have any answers yet as to how it happened… We have our lives and all of our wonderful memories, and a lifetime ahead of us to build more. A huge thank you to the Long Beach Fire Department and to all our neighbors who were there for us… If you know us, you know how special that boat was to our family. It’s just heartbreaking.”
Schnack said people have reached out with kind words and cupcakes. The boat had more than 100 guests from all over the world in the last 4.5 years, he said. The vessel took the couple and others to Catalina more than 20 times, and other places; hosted celebrations; participated in fundraisers.
“From Adventure Guides trips to ones where we just followed the boys in regattas, she’s been the heart of our life on the water,” Schnack said in another post. “I have a billion favorite pictures from Five Buoys.”
