Naples Fire Chief Justin Cox said the fire, which was reported around 4:45 p.m., spread quickly from the boat to the dock and the personal watercraft. When firefighters arrived the boat was engulfed in flames.
The boat’s owner, who escaped unharmed, told firefighters he was turning on the boat’s bilge pump when it caught fire, Cox said. The cause remains under investigation.
Cox said the boat sank and about 60 gallons of fuel will have to be cleaned up. Naples’ fire boat dragged booms over the spill and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection was notified.
The Songo River flows into Sebago Lake. The boat’s owner will be responsible for removing the sunken craft, Cox said. The incident took place in the vicinity of 370 State Park Road, near its intersection with Bear Claw Road.
