Capt. David Nadeau of the Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department said firefighters were able to keep the burning vessel from floating into nearby Trout’s Marina where flames could have spread and caused much more damage. The incident occurred at the DNR access site and boat launch around 7:15 p.m. Sunday.
Nadeau said the fire department’s boat was launched and the crew was able to maneuver close enough to toss a chain with a grappling hook on the end onto the burning boat.
By doing so, firefighters were able to slowly tow the boat toward shore and extinguish the flames before further damage could occur. The owner of the boat could not be located at the time of the fire, but returned to the scene shortly afterward.
The cause of the fire was undetermined and appeared accidental, Nadeau said.
