Fire destroys boat off Spruce Head - Spruce Head, ME

​A pleasure boat was destroyed by fire in the morning as crews from two towns responded. The fire was reported shortly after 7 a.m. Nov. 16.
According to St. George Fire Chief Michael Smith, the 22-foot pleasure boat was tied up to a dock on Rackliff Island. The boat took a beating from the wind storm the night of Nov. 15, the chief said.
A father and son who own the boat went to pump it out and start the engine when a fire ignited. The line burned and the vessel drifted toward Spruce Head Island.
St. George responded to the dock and put out a small fire.
There were no injuries.
Firefighters from the two towns then used Douglas McLellan's lobster boat with him operating it to reach the burning vessel. There were five firefighters from the South Thomaston Fire Department and one from the St. George Fire Department with equipment including a portable pump and hoses.
The crews used ocean water to extinguish the flames.
At one point, the burning boat was close to the shore and the fire crew hooked onto the boat and pulled it away, while still extinguishing the fire. Once the fire was out, the boat was towed to Atwood's wharf on Spruce Head Island for the U.S. Coast Guard to investigate.
The Marine Marine Patrol also responded.
