Nisswa Fire Chief Richard Geike said the runabout boat was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived to the scene. Geike said the boat owner was stopping to get gas when he noticed the fire. The man jumped off the boat and swam to shore about 100 feet away.
Geike said when firefighters arrived, they had to first try to get the boat to shore to extinguish the fire. A nearby boat assisted the fire department by driving back and forth to make waves so the burning boat would float to shore. Once the boat was near the shore, firefighters extinguished the fire.
Geike said the cause of the fire is not known.
The fire was reported shortly after 8 p.m. and firefighters cleared the scene around 9 p.m. Ten firefighters responded to the boat fire.
