Harbormaster Chad Hunter said the 25-foot Pro-Line caught fire shortly after 2 p.m. as the owner, a beach resident, prepared to depart on a fishing trip with a friend.
Hunter said the boat’s engine had recently been repaired and caught fire as the owner was tying off his skiff. The owner realized he could not fight the fire with his extinguisher and decided to get back into the skiff and seek help.
Police and firefighters received numerous calls as thick, black smoke lifted over the harbor.
The boat was moored just off the channel, in front of the owner’s cottage.
Hunter said his crews quickly determined that nobody was on the boat and then used their pumps to knock down the flames. Firefighters responded on their boat as well and helped extinguish the fire.
The fire crews were able to put out the fire without sinking the boat. The wreckage was towed to Brewer’s Marine.
