The boat caught fire between Birmingham Island and the Rock Quarry.
Richard Bay was white bass fishing with friends when he saw the boat in distress about a 10th of a mile away. Bay, who has 22 years of experience as a firefighter, sprang into action to help pull the family to safety.
"The dad was a trooper, mom and daughters were a little more afraid of everything going on," Bay says. "When they got in the boat, they realized they were safe. We were all blessed just to have everyone safe. A boat is different. You can always replace a boat."
Bay says the whole incident lasted about an hour from when he first saw the burning boat to when it sank.
