Several people reported seeing the boat erupt in flames around 7 p.m. July 4 on Tiger Lake in Belfair, said Mason County Sheriff's Office Lt. Jason Dracobly.
“Some folks had taken the boat out for the first time and ... flames started coming out of the motor,” Dracobly said.
Three adults and a toddler, all from Belfair, jumped out of the boat. No one suffered serious injuries and the police report did not indicate whether anyone had life jackets, Dracobly said.
People who saw the explosion helped the occupants to reach the shore and also helped to bring the boat to shore so that responders from the North Mason Regional Fire Authority could extinguish the fire.
“It would appear there was some sort of mechanical fuel failure,” Dracobly said. “Mason County Sheriff’s Office wants to thank the neighbors who came out and assisted the people and also helped to get the boat to where it needed to be to put the fire out.”
