Several people reported a vessel on fire about 20 miles northeast of the island sometime after 5 p.m., Coast Guard Petty Officer Amanda Wyrick said.
The Coast Guard deployed a motorized patrol boat from Station Brant Point and helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod to the scene, Wyrick said. When the rescuers arrived, however, there was no one on board, which prompted a search for the passengers, she said.
It turned out the passengers had been brought safely to shore on Cape Cod, Wyrick said.
Since the boat was mostly submerged in the water on the Coast Guard’s arrival, they did not extinguish the fire, Wyrick said. It also made it impossible to tow the boat, she said.
The Coast Guard was still working with the owners on Saturday evening to figure the next steps with the boat, Wyrick said.
The name of the boat and the identities of the boaters were not released.
