A boat fire Wednesday, Aug. 7 at a Red Wing marina resulted in less than five gallons of fuel spilling into the water and no pooling of hazardous materials, according to Red Wing Fire Department.
Firefighters were dispatched just after 6 p.m. Wednesday to a report of smoke in the engine compartment of a 42-foot boat on the “J” Dock at Ole Miss Marina, according to a news release. The fire was extinguished within 35 minutes and the boat was towed to shore.
Firefighters utilized "environmentally safe" foam, the news release states. Remnants of the foam remained in the water but will dissolve.
All occupants made it off the boat safely, the news release states. Two adjacent boats sustained minor fire damage.
Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office, Red Wing Fire Department and marina staff deemed the waterway safe for operation.
The Minnesota State Duty Officer — a resource for agencies in the event of emergencies, accidents and petroleum spills — was notified.
Additionally, the Red Wing C.A.E.R. group found no pooling of hazardous materials in the bay. The organization, made up of businesses, emergency response agencies and local governments, facilitates response to oil spills on the Mississippi River and Lake Pepin.
Red Wing Fire Department was assisted by by Ellsworth Fire Department, Red Wing Police Department, Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office, city of Red Wing Ole Miss Marina staff, Goodhue County dispatch, the Red Wing C.A.R.E. Group and Tow Boat US Red Wing.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
