Carteret, NJ - A fire destroyed several boats Monday in Carteret, New Jersey.
The privately owned boats were docked at the Carteret Waterfront Marina when the fire started around 6 a.m. Three boats were severely damaged, and two of them sank. The fire also damaged three other boats. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Three vessels caught fire and sank Monday morning at Little Creek Marina in Norfolk.
The Coast Guard told WAVY that it worked with Norfolk firefighters to put the fires out, and no injuries were reported. One vessel did float away, and was obstructing the main channel as of 6:30 a.m. Monday. There’s a 500-yard safety area around that wreckage. No pollution has been reported at this time and the cause of the fires is still under investigation. Two boats sank after they were consumed by fire at Ketchikan’s Bar Harbor early Thursday morning. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries battling the blaze.
In a statement, Fire Marshal Gretchen O’Sullivan says the incident was first reported just after 2:30 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find two boats engulfed in flames. “Both boats sustained major damaged and both sank underwater,” O’Sullivan wrote in a news release. The cause of the fire is officially undetermined, but O’Sullivan says investigators believe it might be related to an alcohol stove aboard the sailboat where the fire started. Harbormaster Dan Berg says the owner of the 30-foot boat had just left when the fire broke out. Not long afterwards, the whole boat was in flames. “Fiberglass burns really hot, and it burned through a couple of his tie-up lines, allowing the sailboat to drift over next to this boat he shares a spot with, which was a 28-foot Kingfisher aluminum boat. And that one burnt completely as well,” Berg said. Flames also scorched the sail and canvas work of another sailboat, which sustained only minor damage. Crews placed containment booms around the sunken vessels to prevent leaking fuel from polluting the harbor. Berg says the owners plan to raise and remove the boats in the coming days. He thanked the Ketchikan Fire Department for its quick and effective response. He says it’s a good idea for boat owners to keep an eye on their vessels as fall turns to winter. “This is a time of year where things like this happen,” Berg said. “People have heaters and heat lamps going in their boat, so they should make sure to check all that kind of stuff and also check their batteries and bilge pumps.” Two firefighters suffered smoke inhalation. One was treated and released at PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center’s emergency room. The other declined treatment. Nearly two dozen firefighters responded to the harbor fire with 10 trucks from all three of Ketchikan’s fire departments. The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Troop F responded to a boat on fire at the Lake of the Ozarks Saturday evening.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the boat was idle at the dock when the engine caught on fire at the 7.7 mile mark channel north of Buck Creek Cove in Miller County. The owner of the boat, 55-year-old Kermit Kallevig, suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment. The boat, a Rinker 24 foot was totaled, Troopers said. Three people were rescued after a boat fire on the Detroit River near Belle Isle on Friday.
The U.S. Coast Guard says one person aboard the 20 foot boat jumped into the water after it caught fire and was assisted by two people on jet skis. One of the jet skis overturned, forcing three people into the river. A helicopter crew was already over the water and was able to send a Coast Guard response boat to the area. The three people were rescued and the overturned jet ski and damaged boat were towed back to shore. Three adults and a child were injured Monday in a boat fire in North Myrtle Beach, according to officials.
SCDNR spokesperson Greg Lucas told News13 that crews were called at 2:13 p.m. to the Johnny Causey Boat Landing in Cherry Grove. All four people were taken to a hospital. North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue along with Horry County Fire Rescue and the Horry County Police Department also responded, according to Lucas. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation, according to North Myrtle Beach spokesperson Donald Graham. No other information about the victim’s conditions or what caused the fire were immediately available. A boat docked at the Emerald City Harbor marina in St. Clair Shores was destroyed in an early-morning fire on Saturday, according to the city’s fire department.
Officials said the blaze was discovered about 5 a.m. Saturday at the marina on Jefferson Avenue, north of Nine Mile Road. Responding firefighters were greeted by a “fully involved boat fire with flames almost 15 feet high,” officials said in a statement. Crews worked quickly to minimize damage to the neighboring boats and were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. The department’s statement did not report whether or not there were any people onboard the vessel at the time the fire broke out. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Rescue crews airlifted a man to the hospital with severe burns after a 75-foot yacht caught fire in Aventura, causing panic among area residents.
Aventura Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to the scene of the blaze in the area of 1520 Island Blvd., in between two apartment complexes, just before 7:25 p.m., Friday. “It was pretty big. You could feel the heat,” said area resident Brian Morales. “We were afraid our building was going to be on fire,” said area resident Barbie Gregory. Morales was one of many residents who came home to witness the burning vessel. “I was like, ‘What the hell is going on,’ and then I saw the smoke,” he said, “and then we got pretty close with my daughter, and you can feel the heat from all the fire, and then, as time went on, it got bigger and bigger.” Witnesses across Aventura took out their cellphones and recorded video of the smoke and flames from various angles. Massive plumes of smoke rising into the air could be seen from several miles away. A time lapse video shot from a distance showed how far the smoke reached. The fire made for some scary moments for Gregory. She said she was having dinner in North Miami Beach when she saw the flames. “My daughter, who’s in Tennessee, sends me a video and says, ‘Mom, what’s going on?’ It says there’s a big fire in Aventura.'” Gregory began to record the fire on video, and she realized it was burning just feet from her home. “So I see in social media, looking at pictures, and I recognized our apartment complex. Scared me to death,” she said. “I started calling neighbors, trying to figure out what in the world was going on.” Firefighters used water and foam to extinguish the flames. They did not spread to other vessels. The injured victim was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center for treatment. His condition remains unknown. Residents are breathing a sigh of relief since their buildings were not damaged. “We had no idea what we were going to come home to find, if our place was going to be stable or not,” she said. “I still feel horrible for people and their loss tonight. It’s obviously tragic, but it is a relief that our complex was not on fire; that was my first original thought.” Just after 10 p.m., crews were still putting out hot spots, as investigators attempt to determine how the fire started. Saturday morning, crews were seen putting cloths and paper into the marina to collect as much oil and fuel that has leaked from the boat. As of 2:50 p.m., the condition of the victim is unknown. What caused the fire is still under investigation. A fire destroyed a 30-foot pleasure craft, a dock and two personal watercraft Tuesday afternoon along the shore of the Songo River in Naples.
Naples Fire Chief Justin Cox said the fire, which was reported around 4:45 p.m., spread quickly from the boat to the dock and the personal watercraft. When firefighters arrived the boat was engulfed in flames. The boat’s owner, who escaped unharmed, told firefighters he was turning on the boat’s bilge pump when it caught fire, Cox said. The cause remains under investigation. Cox said the boat sank and about 60 gallons of fuel will have to be cleaned up. Naples’ fire boat dragged booms over the spill and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection was notified. The Songo River flows into Sebago Lake. The boat’s owner will be responsible for removing the sunken craft, Cox said. The incident took place in the vicinity of 370 State Park Road, near its intersection with Bear Claw Road. |
