Emergency responders from the Waterford Regional Fire Department and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit were sent at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, to the Cass Lake Dry Dock Marina at 4175 Chenlot Drive to tend to victims of a watercraft accident.
Arriving officials learned that multiple people were burned when a 56-year-old Waterford man’s boat exploded after being refueled at the marina.
A 15-year-old girl from West Bloomfield Township who received second-degree burns was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital for medical treatment.
A 14-year-old Waterford girl was burned worse and taken to the Children’s Hospital Burn Unit in Detroit for treatment for third-degree burns. A 13-year-old Waterford girl who got first-degree burns was treated at the scene by paramedics, officials said.
Further investigation revealed the explosion may have occurred due to gas vapors in the engine compartment, according to authorities.
The incident is still under investigation by marine unit personnel.
