A boat fire at Millstone Public Landing in Water View Saturday morning resulted in two juveniles and an adult being transported to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester with burns to the face and hands, reported VMRC media director Laurie Naismith.
One of the juveniles was later transported to Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk for more extensive treatment, said Naismith.
Although names were not released by VMRC, Naismith said a father and his two juvenile sons from Maryland were visiting the children’s grandfather who lives in the Water View area when the boat caught fire about 9:30 a.m. at the landing dock on Parrotts Creek.
Members of the Upper Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department of Water View fought the fire. UMVFD fire chief Billy Collier said on Tuesday that the 24-foot cabin cruiser starting smoking from the engine compartment when the operator (grandfather) attempted to turn on the engine.
After going to his truck for tools, the smoke became fire and the two children were burned along with their father. The children and their father were transported to the hospital by the Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad of Urbanna.
The boat was pushed away from the dock and into the creek, where it continued to burn.
Naismith said there were no charges involved. “It was just an unfortunate and horrible accident,” she said.
