On Sunday afternoon crews responded to the report of a boat on fire in the area of Eagle Island on Sodus Bay. According to deputies, the boat operator, 54-year-old Daniel Kuntz, said he was travelling across Sodus Bay when his motor quit. When he checked, he found the motor compartment fully engulfed in flames.
Kuntz and two young children, ages 6 and 7, were able to escape the flames by jumping into the water. A passing boat stopped and picked them up. No one was injured in the fire.
The Sheriff’s Marine Patrol attempted to remove the remainder of the hull from the bay, where it had become a hazard to navigation. However, while in transit to the Sodus Point substation, the remainder of the vessel sunk in about 25 feet of water.
