The adults and the two children, ages 2 and 4 years old, jumped ship after failed attempts to put out a fire in the engine compartment of a 19-foot 2002 Bombardier boat about 12:22 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14.
Both children were wearing life jackets, according to Sgt. Cal Keuning of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division.
When the sheriff’s office fire boat arrived, smoke and flames were coming from the Bombardier. Crews extinguished the fire and towed the boat to a nearby dock.
The driver of the boat said there were engine problems before the fire started, Keuning said. Neither the adults nor the children on the boat were injured in the incident.
The Ferrysburg Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard — Grand Haven assisted the marine division in the incident.
