Kieran O'Leary, a spokesman for the Westchester County police, said a boat off the shore of Briarcliff Manor caught fire around 5:22 p.m., forcing a man and a woman in their 20s to jump into the river without life vests.
About two miles upriver near Sing Sing prison in Ossining, the Westchester County Police Marine Unit was on patrol when it saw the black smoke rising from the burning, 18-foot Baylinder Bowrider, O'Leary said.
The county police boat rushed to the scene in time for officers Isai Moreira and Willie Saez to pull the man and woman from the water and battle the blaze using the firefighting equipment aboard the police boat.
A second county police boat and the Croton Fire Department also responded to fight the fire, which started in the boat's engine, O'Leary said.
Once the flames were extinguished, the fire-damaged vessel was towed from the scene by Sea Tow.
