Police said the incident happened just before 6:30 p.m. behind the Shore and Country Club.
Officers said six people were on the 30-foot cabin cruiser when it caught on fire and exploded.
Officials said the boat owner had taken off from the dock when he noticed the boat was not running properly. When he turned around, police said the boat caught fire, hurting one woman on board.
CC Buono, who lives nearby and shot video of the boat, said, “I looked outside and there was smoke everywhere a big fire the boat is just on fire. I heard the alarms and the police cars and ambulances and the fire trucks.”
Sergeant Gregg Scully with Norwalk police was the first on scene. He said things could’ve been far worse had the driver not turned around.
He said the boat was about 75 feet from the dock when he arrived.
“According to the owner, he said it was running rough, didn’t feel comfortable, turned it back around and it caught on fire, and the next thing you know, it exploded,” he said. “Six people [were] in the water and that’s all we knew, so I ran down jumped on a police boat and headed out to the scene to make sure that anybody that’s in the water, we’re gonna pull them out.”
Witnesses said some people swam to shore while others were picked up by other boaters on the water.
The woman was taken to the hospital but police haven’t commented on her condition. Another person onboard was also taken to the hospital for treatment. No word on the condition of the two that were injured.
