A family boat outing in Door County ended with three children being evacuated in two helicopters Saturday after a close call with apparent carbon monoxide poisoning. The Sturgeon Bay Fire Department responded to a 4:33 p.m. call from parents who reported their four children might be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, Fire Chief Tim Herlache said. The boat's owners, Matt Sullivan and Jerry Maning, took a ride with their wives and children from the Quarterdeck Marina in Sturgeon Bay to Ellison Bay, Herlache said. The four adults were on the top deck, and the four children had been playing in the cabin below. "One of the children came up to say the others were sleeping," he said. The parents removed the other children from the cabin and called 9-1-1. Already on their way back to Sturgeon Bay, they docked at the Sawyer boat launch, where they were met by paramedics who found two of the children still alert and one very lethargic, he said. All four children were given oxygen and taken by ambulance to Ministry Door County Medical Center, and three were later transported by helicopter to Theda Clark Medical Hospital in Appleton for oxygen chamber treatment. "Carbon monoxide damage is irreversible. It's important to get into a hyperbaric chamber to push it out before it attaches to cells," Herlache said. The four adults were not harmed by the gas.
